California Roots Music and Arts Festival has always been rooted in a genuine enthusiasm for an experience that stimulates all senses through a release of creativity that can be heard, felt, seen, and embodied. We have pioneered the Cali Roots experience, partnering interactive art and music to create an immersive experience. What started in the early years as an opportunity for painters to create art on stage during the music performances has evolved into interactive art experiences for fans and artists alike scattered throughout the venue via the Art Retreat, Interactive Art Stations, Paint Workshops and a Festival Fashion Zone.

Reggae Rise Up

Big Night Live is a top tier luxury music hall unlike any other venue in Boston. The massive 40,000 square feet multi-level performance and event space offers 30 VIP tables with bottle service for those truly looking for the next level of nightclub partying. Red crystal chandeliers hang from high ceilings while Venetian curtains draped across wood-finished walls add a vivid splash of color. The walls are full of amazing pieces of photography and original art to keep the eye busy. The concert hall has a tiered structure, with the lowest level closest to the stage, LED walls surround the stage as well as a supersonic state-of-the-art Funktion-One sound system. Three expansive bars, and luxurious private suites overlook the stage coming together to give party goers an unforgettable experience. They plan to book 200 or so artists a year to play at the venue to rival the likes of famous Boston venues like House of Blues and TD Garden. At Big Night Live, guests are exposed to a unique club experience at what appears to be the cross between a ritzy Las Vegas lounge and industrial New York warehouse.

The Fillmore Auditorium is a concert venue located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. Since opening in 1907, the venue has hosted numerous functions both private and public. It holds the title of the largest indoor venue for general admission seating in Colorado.

Showbox added to its family in 2007 with the addition of the larger Showbox SoDo, a converted-warehouse-turned-concert venue located just south of the sports stadiums in the SoDo district. The space boasts beautiful wood-beam and brick architecture, and has incredible production capabilities and sightlines. In its short history, the venue has already hosted events featuring Kid Rock, Heart, The Pogues, M.I.A., The Hives, Dropkick Murphys and many more.

Marquee Theatre is a music venue in Tempe, Arizona. The theater sits on the north side of Tempe Town Lake near the Mill Avenue Bridge, at the intersection of Mill Avenue and Washington Street, the primary business and entertainment district in Tempe.

The Warfield is a 2250-person venue and has been a San Francisco institution for 86 years. Opened on May 13, 1922, it was built by showman and theatre chain owner Marcus Loew, who named the showplace after his old friend David Warfield, a native San Franciscan who began as an usher and grew to be one of the greatest silent film actors of his time. The Warfield was originally built as a vaudeville and movie palace and became a concert hall in 1979 when Bill Graham Presents booked a two-week run of shows with Bob Dylan. The esteemed hall has been rocking ever since.

Now operated by Goldenvoice, the venue is keeping with its illustrious past. Everyone has played The Warfield. Today, the entertainment has continued to range from artists such as Bob Dylan, Faith No More, Prince, The Killers, Kings of Leon to Adele, as well as played host to charitable fundraisers for organizations such as GLIDE Memorial Church and Tipping Point.

The Bomb Factory and its neighboring venue Canton Hall have been rebranded as The Factory in Deep Ellum and The Studio at the Factory, according to new websites and social media accounts for the new venue.

The phone number and email address for The Bomb Factory have also been delisted, indicating the change for the historic venue is already underway.

The Catalyst is a nightclub located at 1011 Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz, California. The club has hosted big-name artists such as The Beach Boys, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Iggy Pop and Nirvana. The Catalyst moved to its current location in 1973. The main hall is 5000 square feet and can hold 800 people.

Mesa Amphitheatre is an outdoor concert venue with lawn seating located in Mesa, Arizona. It opened in 1979 and has a maximum capacity of 4,950 people. The amphitheatre has kept its original design since opening and has become a popular destination for small and big acts alike.

In partnership with Frank Productions, National Shows 2 (NS2), & Live Nation we have signed an operating agreement with Homegrown Hospitality Group, the owners of the downtown Charleston venue, Music Farm. Our Team is thrilled about this new opportunity to cultivate and grow the arts community in Charleston by increasing the number of shows at the venue while also diversifying the programming. The plan is to renovate the Music Farm and create an environment that allows fans and artists to have the most enjoyable experience possible.

The newly renovated, multi-purpose space will allow for live music, private event rentals – such as weddings, corporate events, and community fundraisers – comedy shows, themed dance nights, and more. Our team plans to take the same energy, creativity, and customer service standards established at the Music Hall over the past decade to bring new life to one of Charleston’s most iconic venues.

I fell in love with live music in this room in High School, and it is a dream come true to now be working with an amazing team to bring the Farm back to life. The NorVa is a performing theatre located in Norfolk, Virginia. The NorVa's name consists of an abbreviation relating to its location.

The NorVa was the brainchild of local music venue entrepreneurs Bill Reid and Rick Mersel, who have also developed the NTelos Wireless Pavilion and have ties to the development of Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach. In 2014, the NorVa was acquired by AEG Presents.

The original NorVa Theatre opened in 1917 as a 2000-seat Vaudeville theater then thrived as a premier movie theatre into the 1970s. The building served as home to the Downtown Athletic Club from 1980 until 1998 when it was renovated for its current use. The building is often noted by its patrons to be charming and aesthetically pleasing due to its rustic and old-style appearance.

The U.S. Pavilion, officially named the U.S. Federal Pavilion, and also referred to as the Pavilion at Riverfront, or simply the Pavilion, is a steel and cable structure located in the center of Riverfront Park on Havermale Island. The Pavilion, which is one of the legacy pieces of Expo '74 and served as the pavilion for the United States during the event, is used today as an event center, with indoor and outdoor event spaces, an amphitheater, raised catwalks, and viewing platforms. The venue is named after the influential 1990s-era group Slowdown Virginia, who had a strong influence on the "Omaha Sound". Slowdown has shows three to four nights each week, as well as a weekly pub quiz. The venue is open one hour before each event and stays open until around 2am, often offering a post-show Happy Hour. Slowdown's shows are usually all ages unless otherwise specified, but on nights with no event, the venue functions as a bar. Slowdown bills itself as a place for rock shows, socializing, dancing, going to the bathroom, sitting, standing, walking, pool, video games, board games, some light reading, etc."

The Stone Pony, one of the world’s best known music venues, opened its doors on Feb. 8, 1974 in a building which formerly housed a popular restaurant called Mrs. Jay’s. Founders John P. “Jack” Roig and Robert “Butch” Pielka first met while working in a club on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights. Roig purchased the building which then housed an abandoned disco called The Magic Touch, and enlisted the managerial skills and construction talents of friend and former co-worker Pielka as general manager and minority partner.

For many years, Pony staff and early patrons believed the club’s name came to Pielka in a dream. But in late December of 2014, Roig revealed that he was out with a young woman in October of 1973, and she was wearing a shirt with small horses all over the front of it. Jack says the shirt inspired the name.

Neither Butch nor Jack could not foresee that their venture would become an integral and irreplaceable part of Asbury Park history. The Stone Pony was about to take a prominent place in an evolving music scene which began at clubs like the Upstage, the Student Prince, and the Sunshine-In.

Dirty Heads is an American reggae rock band from Huntington Beach, California. Their debut album, Any Port in a Storm, was released on September 23, 2008, by Executive Music Group (Fontana/Universal). Their newest album, Super Moon, was released August 9, 2019. They have been associated with music groups such as Sublime with Rome, 311, and Pepper and have toured with groups such as Cobra Starship, Aer, and Gym Class Heroes.

Johnson was raised in Gateshead and lived on the Springwell Estate. From an early age he was interested in music and played guitar, which he wore around his neck. Later he became a member of the band Pigmeat along with Jim Murray and Ray Stubbs. After playing bass guitar at Live Theatre in a panto he was asked to act in the show. He applied for Equity membership but they already had a 'Ron Johnson' so he used his father's name of 'Sammy'. He appeared in several TV productions and often worked with local writers like C. P. Malibu. It’s where Mathew McConaughey flexes his pecs for paparazzi while shirtless on the beach. It’s where Courtney Cox and husband David Arquette recently sold their home for the modest asking price of more than $30 million to Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt. It’s where Julia Roberts built her multi-million dollar, eco-friendly estate as a tribute to Green living. And it’s where Cher, Jennifer Aniston and Mel Gibson share the same 310 area code as the Malibu trailer park community that brought us Shwayze.

Alright, alright, so Malibu trailer parks aren’t exactly the things Detroit’s Eight Mile urban legends are made of, but they’re still not cued for a “Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous” special. Either way, Shwayze has no complaints.

“To me, it was the nicest trailer of all time,” boasts the 22-year-old protégé of Hollywood socialite and Whitestarr frontman Cisco Adler. Adler may rock onstage, but he also made a name for himself as the producer of Mickey Avalon’s hip-hop singles “Jane Fonda” and “Mr. Right.” Couple those credits with a particular nugget on the resume of Cisco’s dad, A-list impresario Lou Adler (that would be the stoner movie “Up In Smoke” we’re talking about), and the smoky haze that is Shwayze comes into clearer focus.

A melting-pot of laid-back melodies, hip-hop rhythms and acoustic guitars, Shwayze’s self-titled debut [Suretone/Geffen Records] pays homage to an all-day-and-into-the-night party lifestyle colored by the rolling tides of his hometown beaches, and the rolling papers that flavor the proceedings. Collaborating with Shwayze, Adler co-wrote all of the songs on the album, producing and providing backing vocals along the way.

“Buzzin’” splashes Cisco’s roots-rock acoustic-guitar and vocal tapestry with Shwayze’s cooler-than-a-sea-breeze hip-hop delivery. Says the rapper, “It’s a new West Coast sound, it’s California chill, West Coast stoner music.” Case in point? “Don’t Be Shy.” “It’s about Malibu being like an endless summer. Cisco came up with the hook and the ‘da-don-don, da-don-don-don’t be shy’ part. I came up with the verses about a couple of chicks I was into. It’s about wanting summer to come back, waiting for the sun and kicking it on the beach.”

“I have a studio in my house, and that made it easy for us,” explains Adler. “I’d usually have a beat made, or we’d just make one right on the spot, or even a whole track, and we’d just go to work. There was no particular process. It was party the night before to get something to talk about, then wake up in the morning and make a song about it… We weren’t signed to Geffen yet, and we weren’t paying attention to that. We were just creating a sound and an artist, just for the sheer fun of it.”

“That was the summer, man,” attests Shwayze, whose moniker pays more than just a coincidental resemblance to movie star Patrick Swayze. “I was single, Cisco was single, and we partied in the pool, partied at the beach, chillin’, hangin’ out with chicks. That’s what we were writing about.”
The self-professed “only black kid in Malibu,” Shwayze (born Aaron Smith) grew up with his grandparents, and despite an endless array of local jobs (“even Starbucks”), found that his most regular income came via his handyman grandfather. “Everyone else pretty-much got sick of me, and the only choice I really had was working for my grandfather, a handyman, as his assistant installing doors and windows, and fixing light bulbs for old ladies…”

But everything changed on a fateful night in 2005, when Shwayze commandeered the stage at Malibu Inn, a coastal hang and live-music haunt that Whitestarr were headlining. With the opening band onstage, the then-teenager jumped up and started freestyling. “They tried to kick me off the stage,” he says, “but I knew Whitestarr’s drummer, Alex Orbison. Orbie got on the drums and did a beat. I was like, ‘I’m the only black kid in Malibu...’ And the crowd went crazy. I looked over to the right and there was Cisco on the side of the stage. That was the first connection we had.”

“I knew he had talent and charisma, so we started hanging out,” recalls Adler. “It takes me a while to get in the studio with someone. Shwayze begged, begged and begged me. Finally, I said, ‘Alright.’ He showed up one day and that was it. We started working together and it was easy.”

“I wasn’t the priority at the time,” says Shwayze. “I’d sit on the couch and just wait for him to have an opening. I’d sit there and chill, play some piano, pick up the guitar, whatever. Then he’d be like, ‘Wanna make a track?’ I’d say, ‘’Hell yeah!’ I was that kid. At first I thought maybe I’m being a little brat, but he’s really down with that. I think he just liked my persistence.”

As Shwayze acknowledges on “Don’t Be Shy,” that persistence paid off: “I’m just a kid livin’ the dream...”

J Boog is a well known Hawaiian/ Island reggae artist.  He has an amazing fan base that stretches past the islands and California (where he’s from). He’s on heavy rotation in my household.  Matter of fact he’s on heavy rotation in a lot of households.  

If you’re new to Hawaiian reggae, you’re in for a good one.  J Boog’s music is in the “must own” status.
