It also boasts incredible views over the Spree from its dance floor, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace that's directly on the water. The club attracts well-known electro and techno DJs; do some lineup research before planning a night out here—especially since the bouncers might quiz you on the DJ du jour.

In the North River area, across from the enormous Sound-Bar is Chicago’s Spybar. At 4,200 square feet, Spybar’s provides a more intimate setting settled in a basement. The style inside is trendy, but subtle. There are oak floors with black walls and above you are exposed rafters. Spybar makes good use of glass and leather in other areas and some really nice indirect lighting.

Hip hop and underground music are played, but either as much as house music played by live DJs and blasted out by a state of the art sound system that will not take it easy on your ears.

The owners of Spy Bar take the place seriously enough that they spent $1 million dollars renovating it years ago. The investment paid off and Rolling Stone Magazine named it in the top ten of best dance clubs in America! Famous DJ and Producer, Seth Troxler, said Spy Bar is “Basically the only place I play in Chicago.”

Spybar doesn’t open till nine, there is usually a cover, but they also offer valet parking to help deal with the downtown location. If you’re in to house music and some EDM, the intimate feeling Spybar provides may be right up your alley.

The best kinds of clubs are owned by the sort people who care about the things that make a club good: the décor, the drinks, the staff and most importantly, the music. Monarch in San Francisco manages to get high marks on all three. The 300-person capacity spot is split into an upstairs bar and lounge area, with a downstairs dance floor with its own bar. Monarch’s design will catch your eyes – an intriguing mix of steampunk (tuba/chandelier? Check), modernism, dark wood, industrial accents, and almost burlesque flourishes. The main floor is split by a wall containing an acrobat’s perch, complete with swing and visible on either side. Plenty of cushy seating, and a free photo booth add to the appeal. The basement dance floor area is its own little world. Voted Best Sound System by SF Weekly, Monarch’s Void Acoustics rig – one of a very small handful in the U.S. – is a marvel of clarity and bass, anchored by their unique-looking horn speakers. The lighting tends to be minimal, really letting the sound stand out. With its poured concrete bar and DJ table, high ceilings (for a basement) and a couple of bottle service alcoves, the downstairs has played host to some amazing talent, from Miguel Migs, Julius Papp, SF icon David Harness, Marques Wyatt, the Fort Knox Five, and Martin Buttrich. The music trends mostly towards house and its sub-genres, but you’ll find a sprinkling of others, and the occasional live band. Despite its lofty name, the Monarch sits in San Francisco’s relatively um, shall we call it…sketchy? Mission neighborhood. Don’t let this stop you. The Monarch is a gem of little spot, and so long as you stay aware, you’ll be fine.

Flash opened its doors in June of 2013 as a collaboration between long-time lovers of music, former DJ’s, and music industry vets. Their goal was to present an intimate space where artists can express themselves clearly and fans can hear their favorite artists in an ideal setting.

The Club Level features an acoustically treated studio-quality room showcasing a custom Funktion One sound system and a next-generation lighting rig designed to heighten the experience. It provides a balance between dance floor, fully stocked bar and wall-to-wall bench seating.

The ground floor, appropriately named Flash Bar, features a separate dance floor and DJ area, coat check, ATM, additional restrooms, and a fully stocked bar specializing in a wide selection of liquor and hand-crafted cocktails.

Flash is open every Friday and Saturday night with headlining national and international DJ talents covering a wide spectrum of house music, from deep to techno. Other styles of music are also presented numerous nights per week.

Mary's Underground is a restaurant and jazz bar in the space formerly occupied by live music venue The Basement, which entertained Sydney for 45 years. On the surface, Mary’s serving lobster and steak frites in a jazz club may seem jarring. The reputation preceding it doesn’t exactly scream “fancy” – burgers, fries and fried chicken would be considered more its remit. But look just a tiny bit below the superficial and you’ll see that this thoughtful streak has been there all along, in everything from the top-notch ingredients Mary’s uses in its popular burgers to the natural wine it helped pioneer in Sydney. Everything at Mary's Underground makes a weird kind of sense.

Whereas upstairs at Mary’s Circular Quay the waitstaff blares ’90s music and serves burgers. Downstairs, at Underground, it’s a different story. There’s lobster on the menu, served classically and without a hint of irony. There’s dry-aged duck from a special dry-ageing room, where they get the skin nice and dry for complexity of flavour.

Co-owner Jake Smyth's long-standing suppliers source him everything from the aforementioned duck to little purple potatoes from Tasmania, which are turned into a salad. The focus is on classic flavours, served thoughtfully and sourced carefully. It might seem like a change of tack from the notoriously over-the-top Mary's gang, but considering Smyth and co-owner Kenny Graham both have backgrounds in restaurant-style dining, this is more of a return to the beginning than a brand new one. The wine list leans Australian, natural and organic, and its poured by well-respected Sydney sommelier Charles Leong and chosen by Mary's wine director Caitlyn Ress, who used to run the wine show at Fred’s.

When the Mary’s guys took over The Lansdowne pub in Chippendale, they enlisted booker Josef Muller to be its head of music. He’s behind the program at Mary’s Underground, which leans heavily on jazz but in a more updated mode than people came to expect from The Basement. They’ve even booked a house band. The band leader presides over a five-piece of New Orleans-style brass and drums players. They play every Friday night.

Some bands will play one night a week for a few months, others for just a couple of weeks. The stage here has hosted names such as Herbie Hancock and Prince. Every week young musicians from around Sydney are invited to put their hands up and play a gig. The vibe can lurch wildly from smooth and restrained to full-blown party. It's a mixed bag, but it's always fun.

Sounds that permeate the air, neon lights, great drinks, a lively crowd…the exhilarating events of a night out are always fun in a city that never sleeps. When out clubbing, you can’t really seem to hear anything over the loud music, but it’s compromise you’re willing to make. Fortunately, at Vent Tokyo you don’t have to sacrifice your eardrums for the sake of a fun night. Club Vent Tokyo opened this year, and it features optimal acoustics within its walls in order to provide guests with a one-of-a-kind music experience. You get the best of both worlds: A place to dance to a crafted selection of house and techno music all night, and a lounge where you can sip on your favorite drinks and relax. Vent Tokyo is located inside a building on a main intersection in Omotesando. Once you find the Festae Omotesando building, you just go straight to the very end of the first floor, and Vent Tokyo will be down the concrete stairs. The space has an underground charm to it. The doors open at 11pm and stay open until 6am! When you first walk in, you may think you’ve entered a concrete art gallery. The layout is nothing short of an art piece itself, with a very minimalist and chic interior. There are two bars, one behind the entrance booth which plays Japanese techno or house music, and the main bar. The main bar and lounge have a space for people to stand and mingle. It also offers small seating options (reserved seats included) and nature-inspired art pieces. The lounge turns into the dance room as two concrete slits in the wall divide the spaces. Not only is it visually interesting, but the club’s structure and building materials themselves were carefully chosen to aid in the natural refraction of sound throughout the space.
