Amapiano is the term used to describe South Africa’s fastest-growing electronic music movement. Emerging in 2016, Amapiano is a medley of deep house, jazz, kwaito and lounge music. The name is derived from the Zulu plural article “ama” and the English noun “piano.” Initially, Amapiano was thought to be merely an underground sound, but the opposite was quickly proven. By 2022, Amapiano had expanded beyond South Africa, reaching the charts in countries around the world.
