PUMP ACTION AND THE RETROGRADE - We're Not In Florida Anymore Tour
Pump Action is a drunk backflip off a moving vehicle, executed with perfect form. Simply put, they kick ass. Emanating from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, this group of killers root their approach to the new wave of funk rock in a refined knowledge of jazz fusion techniques and theories- but this is not just a show for jazz kids. With high flying guitar solos and soaring vocals, all rooted in a groove that is anything but restrained, Pump Action honors the breakneck motion of their funk forefathers to make it simply impossible for an audience to stand still. Simply put, Pump Action will leave your jaw on the floor, and you might never pick it up.
-Max Indiveri, Funk House Shows
Pump Action is a band rooted in friendship, brotherhood, and Miami Hurricanes Football.
Jack, Spencer, Poppy, and Trent met in 2019 as Freshman at University of Miami’s Frost school of Music; there they became friends, then bandmates, then roommates, and after a move to Nashville they became van-mates, bringing their energetic fusion of Funk, Indie-Rock, and RnB to venues and dive bars across the United States.
Some say their music is a cross of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stevie Wonder. Others say a combination of Santana and Justin Timberlake. But classification is never something Pump Action is interested in. They thrive on being a melting pot of commercial and virtuosic, side-stepping the confines of genre for the core belief that good music is good music. Each song is a surprise, and they like it that way.
Pump Action released their debut EP, Coronation, in 2022, and has steadily been growing since the success of their 2023 single, “Maybe It’s You” (infamously known across social media as the “Shroom Riff”). They were on ESPN’s TikTok for their drummer’s rendition of “Apache” with a Roland Sample Pad and a floor-lamp. They have opened for bands such as Bermuda Search Party, Harvey Street, and Winyah. They were a finalist for NPR’s 2025 Tiny Desk Contest. Darius Rucker commented on their Instagram Reel one time. And so on. Pretty cool stuff.
There’s a lot more pretty cool and really cool stuff in the works, but the details on that cool stuff remain a secret for the fate of the universe. For now, catch a show, check out their jams, maybe send them a DM on Instagram and tell them what songs you like. They’re pretty cool dudes, chances are they’ll respond to you.
