Description
Hardware and Wavefield are proud to present the return of DAVE CLARKE to Sydney for the first time in over five years for a special intimate show at Civic Underground on March 28th, 2020.
Dave has been at the top of the game for over two decades, carving out a fiercely individualistic path that has earned him a reputation as a no-nonsense purveyor of visceral, unapologetic music that doesn’t bow to trends or the bullshit of the industry, instead just letting his music do the talking.
He’s supported by equally uncompromising local artists in the form of live electro duo Phax Machine, Sydney techno mainstay Andrew Wowk, and Wavefield residents olssu B2B DJason.

DAVE CLARKE (UK)
Dave Clarke is a DJ with an anarchist streak a mile wide and punk in his soul. He has long embraced many sounds outside staunch club music, and this eclectic approach informs his attitude as a DJ. You’re just as likely to hear obscure new wave and EBM oddities in his sets are you are up front techno slammers from both new and established artists, gritty electro, and even classic acid house.
Despite playing as often as three weekends a month around the world, he brings the same attention to detail and passion to every set, backed up by a seasoned bag of DJ tricks which his early hip-hop roots helped shape. There are few DJs, techno or otherwise, with skills to match.
From small, sweaty clubs to the likes of Fabric, Fuse or Tresor, Clarke nurtures an extraordinary relationship with the crowd. It’s the same with festivals. He’s played Awakenings, I Love Techno, Lowlands, Pukkelpop, Glastonbury and Nature One, and developed a special relationship with Tomorrowland where he has his own stage. Here he’s showcased names such as Green Velvet, Vitalic, Heidi, Seth Troxler, Chris Liebing, Jeff Mills, and Ben Klock. Clarke also continues to be a key player in the Amsterdam Dance Event where his Dave Clarke Presents event at Melkweg has sold out 11 consecutive years running. Clarke’s mix CDs include the techno/electro double World Service outings, one of which sold nearly 100,000 copies and made it into Resident Advisor’s Top Ten Mix compilations of the 21st century.
As a producer, he has an equally impressive history. Releasing on XL, R&S, and his own Magnetic North imprint throughout the 90’s under various guises including Fly By Wire, his career skyrocketed when his trilogy of Red EPs was unleashed on Bush Records in 1994. These catapulted Clarke into a different league and he suddenly found himself remixing the likes of Inner City, The Chemical Brothers, New Order, Depeche Mode, Leftfield, and Underworld. Undisputed landmarks in techno, DJ Mag rightly incorporated the Red series in its All Time Techno Top 100 list. Two critically lauded full-length albums – Archive One and Devil’s Advocate – followed, flecked with hints of breakbeat, hip-hop, and electronica, a novelty in the puritanical techno scene of the time.
After a break from production, recent years saw Clarke make his presence felt again, working with Dutch partner Mr. Jones as _Unsubscribe_ and dropping remixes ranging from John Foxx to Gesaffelstein, Detroit Grand Pubas and Octave One, as well cutting tracks for labels such as Houndstooth and Boysnoize. In 2016 an album of remixes, ‘Charcoal Eyes (A Selection of Remixes From Amsterdam)’, ranging from Placebo to A Place to Bury Strangers, suggested Clarke was revitalised in the studio. His latest album Desecration of Desire confirms this and includes a track made with virtuoso producer Radioactive Man.
And then there’s White Noise, Clarke's weekly radio show which goes out on over 100 FM partners worldwide. A global institution and an indicator of where the scene is headed, White Noise recently celebrated its 700th show and shows no sign of slowing down. Here Clarke casts light on aspiring producers he discovers in his Dropbox alongside more established artists. Deep down, Dave Clarke continues to buck predictability and do his own thing. He flies the flag for true techno spirit. Whether it’s pushing cutting edge sounds on far-flung dancefloors or producing unique original music, he has a consistency of vision and purpose rare in the ever-changing world of dance music.
In short, Dave Clarke might be established, but he will never be establishment.
