They (stylised THEY.) is an American R&B duo from Los Angeles, California, consisting of Dante Jones and Andrew "Drew Love" Neely. The duo started their career in 2015, releasing the debut extended play Nü Religion, which received critical acclaim. That year, they released the commercially successful single "Working for It" in collaboration with Zhu and Skrillex. In 2016, they began touring with singer Bryson Tiller. The following year, the duo released their debut studio album, Nü Religion: Hyena. In 2020, They signed to Avant Garden Records under Island Records and released their second studio album, The Amanda Tape, on October 23, 2020.

When the music starts, it's just drums and space. A shuffling house beat with an eerie minor-key synth. Then a bigger kick drum locks in place and the arrangements come into focus, topped by a pitch-tweaked vocal, androgynous and eager: "Baby, I'm wasted, all I want to do is drive home to you."

That's the start of Zhu's 2014 single "Faded," and until recently, it was almost all the information we had from the young producer. No one knew the full name of the artist behind the project. There were no photographs or interviews, and his only other musical footprints were a clever Outkast mash-up, a brief digital EP and a tweaked-American-flag logo.

But that was enough to make him one of dance music's most coveted new artists.

Despite never having shown his face onstage, Zhu has already signed a major-label deal with Columbia Records, and "Faded" — with tens of millions of YouTube plays — is nominated for best dance recording at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

On Wednesday afternoon, Zhu and a half-dozen members of his label and management staff arrived at the offices of the Los Angeles Times for his first American interview and first photo shoot (he'd previously spoken once, for a few minutes, to the Australian radio station Triple J, which championed "Faded" there).For a producer who cultivated so much intrigue by disappearing, Grammy week will be Zhu's brightest spotlight yet. And he's finally, just barely, ready to talk about it.

The mood was friendly but watchful: less of a gabby meet-and-greet and more of a diplomat crossing borders to start peace talks.

This much Zhu confirmed: His name is Steven Zhu, he's 25, grew up in San Francisco but now lives in L.A., and he is the producer and main vocalist behind his tracks. (Zhu said that he got his musical start "writing for other people" but wouldn't say who and described the tracks' impact as "nothing big.") In person, he looks the part of a late-night house music artist on the upswing: Black sunglasses, black leather jacket, choppy black haircut and low-slung white T-shirt.

As might be expected, Zhu would much rather talk about songwriting and sound design than himself. It's an approach he finds more authentic than personal candor.

"This project is all about art, and we try to make it all about the songs and the response," he said. "Being able to have everyone focus back on music is the first step. But the second is to have influence and have people care."

Other mainstream artists (most recently the Weeknd) earned initial attention by cloaking their identities, but Zhu took this strategy to a level that rivaled Prince, who famously changed his name to a graphic symbol for a time in the '90s. Zhu's first visual gesture was an image of paint strokes, resembling a stylized U.S. flag with a "Z" in the star field.

When "Faded" first dropped in April 2014, bombastic EDM superstars like Calvin Harrisand Avicii suddenly felt much less exciting by comparison.

"'Faded' hit at the pinnacle of the transition to underground house music, but Zhu went against the grain by making his music accessible everywhere while 'he' wasn't," said Senthil Chidambaram, the chief executive of the taste-making electronic music site Dancing Astronaut.

The slow reveal was, in part, the strategy of Zhu's manager Jake Udell of the firm Th3rd Brain and Zhu's indie label Mind of a Genius (Columbia Records executives declined interviews for this article, citing a busy Grammy week). But the aesthetic of the project and its marketing — shows announced on posters with just the logo and dates, tickets sold only through the New York high-fashion boutique Opening Ceremony — were pieces of an all-encompassing plan in place before Zhu ever signed to a major.

"When you see someone like Prince, they way he looks and behaves totally matches the music," Zhu said. "Great music always transcends, but artists have to create the space for fans to go beyond the music."

His goal for the "Nightday" EP was, as he put it, "to work on the dance floor, in the car and in the bedroom." As interest in the project swelled, however, he also had to figure out how to put it onstage. His first American live set would be before an estimated 40,000 fans (per night) at November's HARD Day of the Dead festival in Pomona.

It was a big endorsement from the agenda-setting festival, especially for an artist with almost no live experience. Zhu was billed just below genre superstars Eric Prydz and Deadmau5. He potentially could have wrecked his buzz in front of tens of thousands. But his set — for which he performed hidden behind silhouetted screens and ambient color projections — was the highlight of the festival.

"He delivered big time at HARD Day of the Dead in 2014," said Gary Richards, the DJ and concert promoter who booked Zhu at HARD. "Zhu is a true artist who is bringing an original style and concept to electronic music. We need more artists like him."

As Grammy night approaches, the question now is to figure how much of "him" Zhu is ready to reveal. Artists like Skrillex and Harris have earned Grammys and Top 40 success. But despite working in a relatively new genre (for the Grammys, anyway), those producers look and act like traditional pop stars. Zhu is something else: an Internet-beloved artist who is still unknown as a person. Even the Grammy-winning robots of Daft Punk were, a long time ago, known as Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter.

"Today, kids want access to artists like they are their best friends, and the personality side is going to determine if he's going to be a great producer or a superstar," Chidambaram said. "He can be great in the studio, but to be a flagship guy for this movement in dance music, he's probably going to need to show more of his personality eventually."

That day may be Sunday — or not. When asked if he'll finally show his face on the red carpet at Staples Center, Zhu said he's not certain he's going to the ceremony at all.

"Maybe?" Zhu said, shrugging and grinning. It might not be time to break the spell just yet.

Sonny John Moore (born January 15, 1988), known professionally as Skrillex, is an American DJ, record producer, musician, singer and songwriter. Growing up in Northeast Los Angeles and in Northern California, he joined the American post-hardcore band From First to Last as the lead singer in 2004, and recorded two studio albums with the band (Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count, 2004, and Heroine, 2006) before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2007. He began his first tour as a solo artist in late 2007. After recruiting a new band lineup, Moore joined the Alternative Press Tour to support bands such as All Time Low and The Rocket Summer, and appeared on the cover of Alternative Press' annual "100 Bands You Need to Know" issue.

After releasing the Gypsyhook EP in 2009, Moore was scheduled to record his debut studio album, Bells, with producer Noah Shain. He ceased production of the album, however, and began performing under the name Skrillex, distributing the My Name Is Skrillex EP for free download on his official MySpace page. Subsequently, he released the Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites EP in late–2010 and More Monsters and Sprites EP in mid–2011, both of which have since become moderate commercial successes. On November 30, 2011, he received five Grammy Award nominations at the 54th Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and won three: "Best Dance/Electronica Album", "Best Dance Recording", and "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical". On December 5, 2011, the BBC announced that he had been nominated for their Sound of 2012 poll. On December 12, 2011, he was also named MTV's Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year.

Skrillex has won eight Grammy Awards, more than any other electronic dance music artist. Skrillex has collaborated with Diplo and Boys Noize to form the groups of Jack Ü and Dog Blood respectively. It was announced on Moore's 29th birthday, he reunited with From First to Last and released a single named "Make War". In 2017, Skrillex produced and mixed 8, the eighth studio album by rock band Incubus. In July 2017, Skrillex released another single featuring debuting solo artist Poo Bear.

Jessica Reyez (born June 13, 1991) is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Her 2016 single "Figures" peaked at number 58 on the Canadian Hot 100 in 2017 and was certified triple Platinum by Music Canada and Platinum by the RIAA. Her 2017 EP, Kiddo, led to four nominations at the 2018 Juno Awards, winning Breakthrough Artist. Her follow up EP, Being Human in Public, was released in 2018. It won R&B/Soul Recording of The Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Reyez again won the R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, for "Feel it Too" with Tory Lanez and Tainy, at the 2020 Juno Awards, where she was also nominated for Artist of the Year. Reyez has written songs for Calvin Harris , Kehlani , Dua Lipa, and Normani, most notably penning the hit "One Kiss", and has collaborated with Eminem on multiple occasions. "Being out in front of people and just being ‘The Man’” might sound like a vague and ridiculous dream to have, but for Cameron Thomaz it might be the most appropriate thought to cross any mind. Better known as Wiz Khalifa, the son of two military parents has always had his eye on being a new standard by which cool is measured. Rapping since the third grade and starting to record music at 14 was probably a step in the right direction. The next best move? Inking a deal to Rostrum Records after a meeting with Benjy Grinberg.

Fresh out of high school, it was time to either sink or swim. In 2005 Wiz released his first mixtape, “Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania.” The mixtape was quickly accepted by the local scene and began to gain buzz outside of Pittsburgh. With that excitement growing by the day, it was the perfect time for a proper commercial album. Wiz soon dropped “Show and Prove,” which Okayplayer.com claimed was “arguably the best album of the year.” The accolades began piling up and Khalifa was receiving significant co-signs from XXL, Rolling Stone, and VIBE, alike. A deal with Warner Bros. Records soon followed.

Any other 20-year-old probably would’ve let all this hype go to their heads, but not Wiz. As focused as ever, Wiz only saw this praise as an opportunity to work harder. In 2007, with the help of famed mixtape DJ, Green Lantern, Wiz released “Grow Season,” which was soon followed by “Prince of The City 2.” The sequel to “Prince of The City” would soon out grow its predecessor so much so that the demand for Khalifa’s music was greater than ever.

Unfortunately, the relationship between Khalifa and Warner Bros. dissolved, and once again, Wiz found himself as an independent artist. Typically a huge roadblock for any artist, Wiz refused to allow the lack of a major label deal to slow down his momentum. He and his Rostrum team hit the ground running in 2009 and released three highly acclaimed mixtapes: “Flight School,” “How Fly,” a collaborative mixtape with New Orleans rapper Curren$y, and “Burn After Rolling.” The album “Deal Or No Deal” followed in the Fall and debuted at the top of the iTunes “Hip-Hop” chart, and has remained in the top 50 to date.

In the months following, both his fanbase (known as the “Taylor Gang”) and the anticipation for his new mixtape grew daily. Once Wiz dropped “Kush & Orange Juice” in early 2010, it was clear that he had established himself as one of the rap-game’s brightest young stars to watch. With an unprecedented amount of downloads, not to mention both the top search on Google as well as the number one trending topic on Twitter, it seemed as if the entire nation was on board with the “Taylor Gang” movement. Many said that the release of “Kush & Orange Juice” placed Wiz as the valedictorian of his “XXL Freshmen 10” class and kicked open the doors he and his team were looking to walk through.

Fast forward a few months, and together Wiz and Rostrum Records proudly announced that these doors were those of Atlantic Records, the new home to Wiz Khalifa. Following this huge milestone in his career, Wiz soon embarked on a stint on the famed “Rock The Bells” tour alongside such legends as Lauryn Hill and Snoop Dogg, immediately followed by his nation-wide headlining tour, appropriately dubbed the “Waken Baken Tour.” After receiving co-signs from a multitude of rap veterans, including Rick Ross and Diddy, and humbly rejecting Drake’s offer to join his recent tour, it became evident that Wiz also established himself as a prominent staple online with over 3,000,000 friends on Facebook, and over 1,000,000 fans following him on Twitter. With the video for his first Atlantic Records release, “Black & Yellow,” getting an astonishing 30 million views on YouTube, there is no question about it: Wiz Khalifa’s debut album is bound to be something great.

Dillon Francis has already made a name for himself with his groundbreaking remixes, in-demand production mastery, and cutting-edge videos. Now, the artist/producer/remixer/DJ is about to release his long awaited debut album, Money Sucks, Friends Rule on Columbia Records.

First recognized for helping to bring the tribal dance movement Moombahton to the forefront, he’s scattered the dance music landscape with numerous influential EPs thus far, but it’s the effervescent debut album that the music world has been patiently waiting for.

Tracks include “Get Low” with DJ Snake, the anthemic “Love in the Middle of a Firefight” featuring Brendon Urie (from Panic! At The Disco), “When We Were Young” featuring Sultan + Ned Shepard VS Chain Gang of 1974, “We Make It Bounce” featuring Major Lazer & Stylo G, “Set Me Free” featuring producer/DJ Martin Garrix, and the gritty, mind-blowing “All That” featuring Twista and The Rejectz.

Dillon’s journey was full of pit-stops. First he attended art school, then he became a ‘trainee’ in a photography studio where he realized, “I didn’t want to do that – I wanted to play and make music, kind of knowing I was going to have to ‘make’ the music I wanted to hear.”

After spending some time in Atlanta interning for Cory Enemy to get to know the dance music scene, he would move back to LA and hole up in the back house of his parents’ place, getting to know his Ableton Live, 24/7.

One story he relishes is his own personal revelation about Moombahton. “I was introduced to the artist Munchi because he had done a remix for Steve Starks on the same song (“Git ‘Em”) I did, except his was ten times better. I started scouring his SoundCloud, listening to everything. The tracks that were genre labeled “Moombahton” were the only tracks I couldn’t figure out the tempo of by just listening to them,” says Dillon. “So I started experimenting with my own productions.”

Later, Dillon would play a cut of his own for DJ Ruckus, who he was working for at the time, slowed down to 110 bpms. Ruckus loved the track (‘Masta Blasta’) so much, Dillon convinced his manager to send the track to Diplo. “And that was my break,” he says.

He’s been bringing music fans along for the ride ever since. The phenomenal collaborations he’s managed to assemble on the new album speak volumes about his ability to connect all musical dots.

“Love in the Middle of a Firefight” came about because of a tweet. “I just popped Brendon a message saying we should do a song together,” says Dillon. “It was a dream to work with him.”

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the ominous “All That.” “I can’t believe I got to work with Twista,” says Dillon. “That’s one of the wildest tracks I’ve ever done.”

Working with Martin Garrix on “Set Me Free” was another idyllic partnership. “He is so great to be around, has such happiness when he’s creating. The song was truly a labor of love.”

Dillon says making “Get Low” with DJ Snake was a very fulfilling process. “We were intent on finding what works and what doesn’t. I eventually practiced playing it live, which is always my ultimate test if a song is going to work or not.”

But he does believe in the theory of not giving too much away. “Save the best part for last, then you make them want to go back to the beginning,” he says. “And you always leave them wanting more.”

Yung Bleu is a widely recognised American rapper from Alabama, who started his career in the early 2010s, inspired by his brother and local hip-hop circles. He started rapping at the young age of eleven and first rose to prominence in 2013 with his debut mixtape, Hello World. Yung Bleu was eventually signed by Young Boss Entertainment and honed his style over the coming years, working on a series of mixtapes.

Yung Bleu was acquainted with rapper, Boosie Badazz, and began collaborating with his musically on several releases. He secured a deal with Columbia Records and made his breakout moment in 2017 when he released the single, ‘Miss It’. The single was positively received and grew his following substantially, boasting thousands of views on YouTube. Yung Bleu continued to build his profile and develop his style, releasing ‘Unappreciated’ in 2018 and ‘Ice on My Baby’.

In 2019, Yung Bleu released the single ‘Elevatorz’ amongst several others, this particular single featured PnB Rock and received a positive response from both fans and critics alike. Yung Bleu has a huge online following, boasting 831k followers on Instagram and 834k subscribers on YouTube. Most recently, he released ‘Running Out of Love’ in 2020, as part of his 2020 album titled Bleu Vandross 3.

Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe (born February 6, 1993) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, actress and former model. Her name means "God Is With Us" in her father's native language, Shona, from Zimbabwe.[3] Raised in Los Angeles, California, she began her entertainment career at the age of 3 when she began modeling and acting.

In 2012 Tinashe released two critically acclaimed mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012) which she created in her home studio. After the release of the mixtapes, Tinashe signed withRCA Records. She released her third mixtape Black Water (2013) and is currently working on her debut solo album Aquarius, due for release in October 7, 2014.[4] Tinashe released her debut single "2 On", in January 2014. The song lived as the #1 song on rhythm radio for over 4 weeks and has currently peaked at number 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming her first Top 40 hit single.[5]

Apart from music, Tinashe is known for her acting. Tinashe made her acting debut in the television film Cora Unashamed (2000). Tinashe has also appeared for the film The Polar Express alongside actor Tom Hanks, and from 2008 to 2009 Tinashe had a recurring role in American sitcom Two and a Half Men as Jake's girlfriend Celeste.
