The Novo

Philly is about to get its own “premier nightclub” that will entertain 1,000 guests a night in a space “designed to be a hybrid between upscale nightclub venues of New York City and Los Angeles fused with international influences.” NOTO (“Not Of The Ordinary”) will open this fall at 1209 Vine Street. Founders James De Berardine, a Lafayette College graduate, and his mother Micheline, are partnering with big names in the small pond that is the Philly club scene: Ryan Dorsey (founder of Recess Lounge and former general manager of after-hours bar and club, Zee Bar), Zach Seidman (formerly of the Fillmore Philadelphia, Atlantic City’s HQ Beach Club, HQ Nightclub, and Dusk), and Jeff Bowell (formerly of STARR Restaurants and part of the successful Las Vegas and Atlantic City openings of mur.mur, LAX Nightclub, Savile Row, HQ Nightclub and HQ Beach Club) — to make the 15,000 square foot club a success.

If you visited the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana a couple years ago, you would’ve been met by cover bands, one-hit wonders or closed doors. It had its moments, of course, but those moments were rare thanks to a lengthy closure and lackluster booking. Enter Jon Reiser, former partner and booker for Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Reiser purchased the venue and made several significant changes: booked popular acts, upgraded the sound system, added a smaller venue-in-a-venue called the Constellation Room. The Observatory now hosts popular acts such as Method Man , GWAR, Tiesto, Waka Flocka Flame and many, many more. That also includes residencies from local acts. Selling out shows is now a habit for this place. Most of all, it provides a valuable service to the whole county by bringing in acts we could usually only see by driving to Los Angeles. Oh, and it even—gasp!—makes Angelenos cross the Orange Curtain for a show.

Those who know Webster Hall solely as the roomy host to ascendant indie-acts and faded legends alike will be surprised to hear that the faux-marble labyrinth often doubles as a real-life night club featuring cover-charged theme parties and big-name DJ sets. The four-story, 40,000 square foot space includes a main stage, lined with balcony space on either end, as well as a few amenities and extras: an underground coat check, a large back-area bar (plus a few rarely-trafficked side bars,) bathroom attendants, the 600-capacity Marlin Room, and the Studio at Webster Hall, a smaller venue-within-a-venue with an intimate atmosphere. Attendees are usually too entranced by the spinning stage lights and gothic chandeliers to notice the multi-culti hieroglyphic hode-podge lining the venue’s wall; the upstairs unisex bathroom – complete with checkered, hop-style design and blackboard walls and chalk sticks on string to encourage scrawled musings from stall occupants – is harder to ignore. Most importantly, the house sound system’s crisp low end refuses to be ignored, probably thanks to a recent $1 million upgrade

Situated in Seattle’s historic pioneer square district, Washington Music (WaMu) Theater has been host to a number of A-list concerts, plus a variety of A-list companies for meetings, dinners, parties and fashion shows.  The space has an amazing flexibility allowing it to transform theater capacities from a 3,500 to 4,700 up to 7,200. Additionally, the theater lobby offers 10,000sq.ft. of “black box” space with in-house ambient lighting, allowing for endless possibilities.

Hollywood Palladium is a theater located at 6215 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California. It was built in a Streamline Moderne, Art Deco style and includes an 11,200 square foot (1040 m²) dance floor including a mezzanine and a floor level with room for up to 4,000 people. The theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Daylight Beach Club (DBC) made it's debut Summer 2013 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, and since then has gone on to become one of the hottest day parties in Las Vegas. Daylight features 70 daybeds, 25 cabanas, 6 LED screens, a 5,000 sq. foot pool, and some of the top DJs in the business, including Skrillex, Alesso, Ingrosso, Axwell, Nicky Romero, and Krewella.

Daylight is open during the summer vegas pool season, which usually starts late March/early April and runs til Labor Day.

The Warfield is a 2250-person venue and has been a San Francisco institution for 86 years. Opened on May 13, 1922, it was built by showman and theatre chain owner Marcus Loew, who named the showplace after his old friend David Warfield, a native San Franciscan who began as an usher and grew to be one of the greatest silent film actors of his time. The Warfield was originally built as a vaudeville and movie palace and became a concert hall in 1979 when Bill Graham Presents booked a two-week run of shows with Bob Dylan. The esteemed hall has been rocking ever since.

Now operated by Goldenvoice, the venue is keeping with its illustrious past. Everyone has played The Warfield. Today, the entertainment has continued to range from artists such as Bob Dylan, Faith No More, Prince, The Killers, Kings of Leon to Adele, as well as played host to charitable fundraisers for organizations such as GLIDE Memorial Church and Tipping Point.

The A-list-loved venue on the Sunset Strip has thrown out the black interiors and velvet seating for peach walls and plenty of greenery — but not to worry, the iconic puppet shows will remain.
The Rat Pack is back at Bootsy Bellows, but with a new look. 

The former rendition — an old Hollywood, dimly-lit burlesque nightclub — has been replaced by a summertime escape mirroring Frank Sinatra’s 1940s Palm Springs home. The star-loved venue on the Sunset Strip has thrown out the black interiors and velvet seating for peach walls, pastel couches and plenty of greenery — but not to worry, the iconic puppet shows will remain.

Co-owned by H.Wood Group's John Terzian and Brian Toll, and star David Arquette, Bootsy Bellows has been an L.A. nightlife staple since it entered the scene in 2012, and has been under renovations since August 2018 with John Sofio of Built, Inc. to design and bring the revamped space to life, this time with a more homey aesthetic. 

“You feel like you’re not in a nightclub, even though you will be,” says Terzian, who, along with Toll, now operates more than a dozen clubs and restaurants around Los Angeles, including nearby Blind Dragon, among other hot spots. “What we’re masking it with is the residential feel that I don’t think a lot of people are paying attention to. So we’ll have the entertainment, puppets and probably a few other surprises that go with that, but our overall feeling is marrying those two worlds.”  

A decked-out residence, at that. Drake’s personal sound guy was brought in to work on the DJ booth and speakers, embedded LED lights were added to the walls and ceilings to put on custom light shows, and gone is the signature VIP room that once welcomed Hollywood’s biggest names. That decision, is in part, thanks to the social media culture of 2019. 

“When Bootsy first opened in 2012, celebrities wanted to be hidden, they wanted to go out the back door, they wanted to have their own room and not be bothered and so we created this VIP room,” Toll explains. “As the evolution of nightlife changed, the celebrities who go out now want to be seen, they want to be on Instagram, they call the paparazzi on themselves — some don’t, but a lot of them do —so they want to be in the main room.” 

The revamped Bootsy Bellows opens its doors to the public on Friday, and hosted an early family and friends preview last week, welcoming Dave Chappelle and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis, among others.

The Anthem is a music venue and auditorium under construction in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Anthem is part of District Wharf, a comprehensive redevelopment of the Southwest Waterfront area.

The 57,000-square-foot venue, which cost $60 million (USD), will have a movable stage and backdrop that will allow capacity to vary from 2,500 to 6,000. Balconies will be closer to the stage than most venues, to offer the best views. The venue will be operated by I.M.P., which manages Washington's 9:30 Club and Lincoln Theatre as well as Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion.

The Armory was the most expensive building in Minnesota at one time. The building was designed by St.Paul architect P.C. Bettenburg, who was also a major in the Minnesota National Guard. From the late 1930s through the 1970s, it was a venue for civic events, including concerts, political conventions and sporting events.

The building was used by the Minneapolis Lakers as a part-time home between 1947–1959, and as its primary home court for the 1959–1960 NBA season.


In 1982, Minneapolis native Prince used the building to shoot the music video for “1999”. Sixteen years laters, Aerosmith recorded their music video for the song “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”.

Hennepin County bought the Armory in 1989 with plans to place a new county jail on the site. The Minnesota Historical Society sued and in 1993 the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the structure was protected by state law and could not be torn down because of its historical status.

As of early 2017, the Minneapolis Armory is poised to make a triumphant return. The venue has returned to its roots - being the host to a number of social functions: concerts, sporting events, trade shows, and other private celebrations.

Late 19th and 20th century Cuban immigration to the United States was impressive for the craft talents brought to the country. Along with their Spanish counterparts, skilled Cuban cigar makers made Tampa’s hand rolled cigars world-famous.

As early as 1899 Cuban immigrants formed recreational societies with varying degrees of success, and in 1902 Cuban workers founded “El Circulo Cubano” which means “Circle of Cubans.”  It was a mutual aid society to “bind all Cuban residents to Tampa into a fraternal group, to offer assistance and help to the sick.”  The club provided a gathering place for members and served as a unifying force in the Cuban community.

The Building
Fire destroyed the first clubhouse in 1916, and soon afterward members initiated plans for its replacement.  The present 4-story, yellow brick building with Neoclassical design elements sits on the original site. Constructed in 1917, the building contained a two-story theater, pharmacy, library, ballroom and Cantina.  Imported tile, stained glass windows and elaborately carved scraffito spandrells decorated the structure and The Grand Ballroom ceiling displayed elaborate murals.  It once housed a gymnasium, complete with lockers, a swimming pool, and two bowling lanes.

The Courtyard, located west of the building, has hosted boxing matches, famous Cuban entertainers such as Benny More’ and Celia Cruz as well as the big band sounds of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. On the top floor, The Grand Ballroom continues to be the scene of many lavish wedding receptions, New Year’s Eve parties and dances.

Opened in 1961 on land the church owned for more than 100 years, the structure went on the market in January and sold earlier this year. It now appears that its future includes loud booming electronic music and pretty people lining up around the block.  

The guys behind popular nightlife hotspots Clé, Saint Dane's, Christian's Tailgate, and other projects plan on having the building renovated and ready to use by the end of the year. 

Clé is just a few blocks south along the METRO line at 2301 Main. 

The new club will be known as Spire, which owner Zack Truesdell says is a nod to the golden spire on the top of the existing church. According to the new owner, the 11,000-square-foot building, on about one-third acre at the southern edge of downtown, is a lot bigger on the inside than it appears. The 15,625-square-foot site had been listed for $2.25 million.

Spire won't be strictly a music venue but Truesdell says he hopes it will be booked 60 percent of the time with electronic dance music acts.

Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, known professionally as XXXTentacion (), was an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Despite being a controversial figure due to his widely publicized legal issues, XXXTentacion gained a cult following among his young fanbase during his short career through his depression and alienation thematic driven music. He was often credited by critics and fans for his musical versatility, with his music exploring emo, trap, lo-fi, indie rock, nu metal, hip hop and punk rock.

Born in Plantation, Florida, XXXTentacion spent most of his childhood in Lauderhill. He began writing music after being released from a juvenile detention center and soon started his music career on SoundCloud in 2013, employing styles and techniques that were unconventional in rap music, such as distortion and heavy guitar-backed instrumentals drawing inspiration from third-wave emo and grunge. In 2014, he formed the underground collective Members Only and alongside other members of the collective he soon became a popular figure in SoundCloud rap, a trap music scene that takes elements of lo-fi music and harsh 808s.

XXXTentacion rose to mainstream attention with the single "Look at Me". His debut album 17 (2017) was certified double platinum by the RIAA. His second album ? (2018) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and the album's lead single, "Sad! ", reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. On June 18, 2018, XXXTentacion was fatally shot at the age of 20, in a robbery at a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The attackers fled the scene in an SUV after stealing from him a Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000; four suspects were arrested. No trial date has been set for the accused.

XXXTentacion has RIAA-certified sales of 38 million units in the US and BPI-certified sales of over 7 million units in the UK, bringing his total to 45 million certified records sold within the two countries. Since his death, he has posthumously won an American Music Award, a BET Hip Hop Award, and received 11 Billboard Music Award nominations. Two posthumous albums were released, Skins (2018) and Bad Vibes Forever (2019); the former became his second number-one album on the Billboard 200.

Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown (born June 7, 1993), known professionally as Swae Lee, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and composer. He is one half of the hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd with his brother Slim Jxmmi. In 2017, he was featured on the single "Unforgettable" by French Montana, which reached the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut studio album, Swaecation was released on May 4, 2018, as a part of a triple album set, which also contained the studio albums SR3MM by Rae Sremmurd, and Jxmtro by Slim Jxmmi. He was later featured on the single "Sunflower", from the Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack, which has peaked at number one on the Hot 100, becoming his first top-charting single as a solo artist.

The Bronx representing rapper waded through a fierce bidding war when several labels began taking interest. Among these, were Def Jam, Warner Bros. and Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music. Yet, when all was said and done, Montana came afloat announcing that he was ready to ride the wave with hip hop impresario Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records (via Interscope Records).

The partnership, made possible due to Bad Boy president Harve Pierre, makes perfect sense. The label has earned a reputation of igniting the careers of bubbling street artists, transforming them into steaming hot hip hop game changers; a path which fit into French Montana’s vision.

Born Karim Kharbouch in Casablanca, Morocco, Montana immigrated to New York City with his family at age 13. His parents, seeking greater opportunity than what they could find in their native land, settled in The Bronx. While fluent in French and Arabic, Montana spoke only a small bit of English. However, he quickly became acclimated to Bronx culture, partly through his infatuation for hip-hop; an obsession which would later become his profession.

“I just love hip-hop. [At first] the rapping was just a hobby,” explains Montana. “I figured out it was a career when I got my first check, [after] I came out with the Cocaine City DVD. It was a winner from the jump.”

“Winning,” it was; but Montana is no new jack that got lucky. This shot caller's come up dates back almost a decade. When street DVD's were king, Montana's Cocaine City series, which he began dropping in 2002, were grassroots video royalty. Featuring raw and uncut interviews with both up-and-coming and established artists like Jadakiss, 50 Cent and Young Jeezy, each volume was also interspersed with music from Montana himself. “The DVDs were always the plan for me to get on as far as rapping,” says Montana. “It was a platform. It was a stepping stone.”

The next step in his journey to rap riches was solidifying his growing fanbase by dropping great music. Acclaimed projects including his Mac & Cheese and Coke Wave series of mixtapes established his rep as a hustler with legit rhyme skills that listeners could steadily gravitate to. Mixtapes, viral videos and songs like “Choppa Choppa Down,” featuring Waka Flocka Flame, only heightened Montana’s buzz.

That buzz was amplified with the release of his single, “Shot Caller,” in 2011. The song became a runaway smash, earning major airplay across the nation and certifying Montana as the next big rapper out of NYC. “I just caught on fire. They say every couple of years someone comes and sweeps the streets,” says Montana. “First it was DMX, then it was 50. I guess it’s my turn now.”

His decade long journey to the top has not come without its own set of trials and tribulations—the greatest of these, a late night shooting of which Montana fell victim. All of his struggle, as well as success, will no doubt come to light on his debut album, Excuse My French, which is due out this year.

The album, which is being executive produced by Diddy and Rick Ross, with Harve Pierre serving as co-executive producer, has already been named by Complex Magazine as one of the “most anticipated albums of 2012.” The project features several guest appearances, including: Max B, Drake, Rick Ross (and the rest of the Maybach Music Group), Bad Boy and of course his Coke Boys crew (Chinx Drugz, Charlie Rock, Cheeze and Flip). Production will be handled mostly by longtime collaborator Harry Fraud (“Shot Caller”).

While the streets patiently await Montana’s highly anticipated official debut, he continues to stay in the mix. Having become highly sought after as a guest artist, he has lent his talents to Rick Ross' smash street single, "Stay Schemin," as well as Akon's, “Hurt Somebody.” XXL Magazine recognized and placed Montana on the magazine’s annual Freshman Class list which highlights rappers on the rise. And recently, Montana dropped yet another fiery mixtape, Coke Boys 3.  He plans to drop Mac & Cheese 3 in the near future.

Following through on the enormous expectations he has built up for himself is a matter of keeping his ear to the streets. “I just pay attention to what people say,” offers Montana, who is currently a featured act on Drake’s Club Paradise Tour. “The people chose me. You can’t come out and say you hot. The people gotta choose you.”

Batista was born in Bajos de Haina, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.
