St. Paul and The Broken Bones is an American eight-piece soul band based in Birmingham, Alabama, United States, that formed in 2012. The band is composed of Paul Janeway, Browan Lollar, Jesse Phillips, Kevin Leon, Al Gamble, Allen Branstetter, Amari Ansari, and Chad Fisher.
Inspiration can strike at any time, in any place. For some, it's a getaway to a scenic destination. For others, it's found in the hallway of an art gallery or on a shelf in a library. For Paul Janeway of St. Paul and the Broken Bones, it was a visit to a hospital for an emergency appendectomy, leading to a fever dream, that helped bring their new album to life.
With that scene setting the stage, The Alien Coast is a dramatic departure for the 8-piece soul band from Birmingham, Alabama. The foundation of the group remains, but they've added psychedelic- and stoner-rock influences. It is a grittier sound, and it lends itself to The Alien Coast's theme of isolation.
We talk with Paul about not being afraid to branch out and try new things and why the band will go along with his wild ideas. Plus, the band celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and Janeway has a few ideas as to what's kept them together and successful for so long.
