Barclay Crenshaw is more readily identified by the moniker Claude VonStroke, through which he's built a career pushing low end-heavy house as a DJ, producer and one of the minds behind the Dirtybird label. He made his formal debut under his given name with a couple singles released over the past few months, "Sleepy Kids" and "The Gene Sequence," each signaling a shift away from house toward a sound more readily incorporating elements of hip-hop, downtempo and bass music.
Now Crenshaw has uploaded a mixtape "inspired by themes of otherworldly exploration and retrofuturism." Heavy on his own tracks and remixes (and one cut featuring The Cool Kids), Transmission 001 also includes tunes from the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow and Salva. The mixtape comes ahead of a Barclay Crenshaw album, due in January 2017.
Crenshaw will head out on an 11-stop US tour in support of his album, starting with a night at LA's Low End Theory on January 25th.
