Recorded in the kitchen of a bungalow in Echo Park, Los Angeles with a Tascam cassette 8 track machine, “As Killers Do” is Neale’s fourth collaboration with Guy Blakeslee and stays true to the duo’s commitment to minimalism and the raw immediacy and hand-made intimacy of home recording. Totaling a mere 28 minutes, the ten songs on the record offer up a variety of sonic worlds, from echoes of LA’s Paisley Underground and '60s girl group sha-la-las, to metaphysical proto-punk, timeless outsider folk and Surrealist psych-pop. A brilliant lyricist, Neale has a unique ability to uncover the extraordinary within the mundane. “As Killers Do” showcases her ever evolving crystalline vocal mastery and razor sharp insights into the human condition. By exploring her struggles on the inner plane against the backdrop of the accelerating chaos and imbalance of our digital society, she alchemizes a transformation - from obsessive overthinking and often debilitating anxiety at the start of the record, to a hopeful, grounded and mystical perspective by its end. The quiet intensity of this record serves to remind us that the antidote to anxiety is creativity. Lael has still never owned a “smart-phone” and has remained wary of social media. Her DIY ethos of home recorded music and self-directed Handycam videos is now expanding with the launch of her new label Consensual Sound, which takes its name from her Substack. “As Killers Do” will be limited to 500 vinyl copies, each with a handmade cover and mostly available directly from Neale. Her primitive original paintings, which she’s been selling at the merch table in lieu of carrying heavier items, appear on the record cover and in crude stop motion form in the accompanying music videos. It all adds up to a personal artistic world built around handmade imperfections, intended to foster direct personal connections and offer experiences instead of mass produced products. Neale writes: “What’s real is becoming much harder to discern day to day. And for that reason, I hunger for it more strongly. I used to long for more followers, higher streaming numbers, more sales, but in the light of recent revelations concerning falsification of numbers, I am much less interested in it. I make music and paintings because it’s what I do. Because I go crazy inside my own mind when I’m not making things. And it’s peak fulfillment when the things I make to help myself work to help someone else.” Born and raised in Virginia’s idyllic countryside, Neale brought the high-lonesome sound of her home state with her when she moved to California to pursue music. After years of writing songs on guitar and playing small venues in Los Angeles, she discovered the Omnichord in 2019, which sparked a new creative direction. Working with Blakeslee, she recorded an unpolished collection of songs on a cassette 4-track, which Blakeslee sent to Sub Pop Records in March 2020. The resulting album, Acquainted With Night, struck a chord with listeners during the bizarre days of early 2021. Star Eaters Delight (2023), deepened the collaboration with Blakeslee, infusing minimalist soundscapes with a heightened electric energy. The album’s subsequent tour included sold-out shows in Los Angeles, New York City, London, and Paris, multiple trips across Europe, and a West Coast run supporting kindred spirit Weyes Blood. Altogether Stranger (2025) led to more acclaim, a sold out tour of the United Kingdom and opening slots supporting Beach House, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio and Cass McCombs. Between tours, Neale and Blakeslee split time between Los Angeles and her family’s farm in Virginia. Inward Eye, the new record from Spacemoth, is a journey through the inner and outer worlds, cosmic psychedelic pop made of pulsating rhythms and loops of sounds inspired by cycles of nature and the cycles of life. “It’s a metaphor for the mind’s eye, your imagination and memory, your ability to visualize experiences and emotions,” says Qudus. The years following Spacemoth’s 2022 debut, No Past No Future, were busy ones for Qudus. Spacemoth hit the road as the support act for Tortoise, Spellling, Speedy Ortiz and others. In 2024, Qudus produced psych rock band La Luz’s (Sub Pop) News of the Universe, a collaboration that led to her joining the group on the road over the last few years. While criss-crossing the country on various tours, Qudus ensconced herself in the back of the van with a tiny synthesizer and started piecing together the songs that became Inward Eye. Inward Eye establishes a bigger vision for Spacemoth’s sound, one charged with groove and motion. Opener “Do We Exist?” is a spacey pop banger that begins with a lone repeating bassline and slowly builds to a galactic cacophony. “Internet Fantasy” features a droning organ and modulated vocals overlaid on a bouncing bassline and crisp drum pattern that soothes in their repetition and predictability. “North Star” is an ode to connection over time and distance, while “Flower Memory” reflects the nostalgic glow of the family movies that played while she was making the record. Sonically, Inward Eye is indebted to the interplay inherent to bands with multiple players: the intricacy of Can, the post-rock of Tortoise, the avant-pop of Stereolab. The self-command of Kraftwerk and Cluster were also huge influences. On Inward Eye, Qudus has crafted exquisitely patterned, cyclical music that still feels loose and imaginative, arranged to evoke positivity while allowing space for listeners to map out their own emotional journeys through their inner worlds.
