Based in Portland, Oregon, Tony Furtado is an acclaimed singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and two-time National Bluegrass Banjo Champion. Originally breaking onto the national scene out of the San Francisco Bay Area, Furtado spent the 1990s recording six critically acclaimed albums for the iconic independent label Rounder Records. For over three decades, he has pushed the boundaries of contemporary Americana, crafting a unique and soulful blend that is deeply rooted in tradition but progressively oriented. Known equally for his innovative, progressive banjo style and masterfully soulful slide guitar work, his artistry has evolved from early instrumental compositions to deeply personal and socially conscious songwriting. Today, his lyrics draw from classic Americana traditions while exploring modern emotional and political landscapes.
Now an established fixture within Portland’s independent music scene, Furtado has released nearly 20 albums and shared stages with iconic artists like Alison Krauss, Gregg Allman, and David Lindley. Driven by a philosophy of continuous creative rebirth, Furtado balances his musical mastery with work as a professional ceramic sculptor. Ultimately, his artistry celebrates a deep connection to listeners, ensuring his place as one of the Pacific Northwest's most enduring roots musicians.
