Long Play returns to Rhythm, where we listen to acclaimed albums, old and new, on the space's stacks. For this edition, local left-field DJ and DIY event organizer Hemlock curates the best of post-dubstep from the years 2007 - 2013. Post-Dubstep is a term used to describe the increasingly hybrid forms of electronic music that were inspired by dubstep. Frequently criticized as a catch-all term that was used to describe the soul-searching sounds of James Blake, the house infused garage of Joy Orbison and Jamie XX, and the propulsive, 140-bpm juke iterations of Addison Groove, ‘post-dubstep’ once dominated electronic music journalism for years before it was replaced with the equally amorphous genre description of ‘bass’. Nonetheless, the ‘post-dubstep’ movement in its heyday characterized an incredibly creative and innovative time in the history of electronic music - which, in hindsight, undeniably generated many of the greatest electronic hits of the 10s and forever shaped the landscape of what is considered ‘cutting-edge’ electronic music today. The evening will be split into two parts. Part 1 will focus on the beginnings of post-dubstep music and its various hybrid mutations. We will go from ‘island to island’, exploring the different mutations of dubstep-turned-house, or dubstep-turned-juke, as we sail together across what music blogger and Keysound label head Blackdown Soundboy calls the ‘post-dubstep archipelago’ - a collection of dubstep hybrid-forms with other electronic music genres. In Part 2, we will dock our ship at the calm shores of one of post-dubstep’s most celebrated islands, James Blake’s dubstep-turned-RnB self-titled debut album. As a DJ, he selects genres to evoke shifting moods, using driving basslines as a cohesive motif through every set. Beyond co-founding Notabbq and Lucid, two collectives raising the bar for immersive Toronto raves, Hemlock helps run local event series like Muster Point. His sound has earned him opening slots for headliners like Roman Flügel, Destiny, and Overland. He runs his own show biweekly on Toronto’s own Another Setting Radio.
