Okonski is the eponymous piano trio led by Asheville, North Carolina–based pianist Steve Okonski, featuring Michael Isvara Montgomery on upright bass and Aaron Frazer on drums. Often recording fully improvised performances directly to tape, the trio’s music has been described as meditative, introspective, and ethereal.
Okonski’s compositions emphasize space and melody, pairing expressive piano lines with subtle rhythm and texture. A longtime collaborator with Durand Jones & The Indications, he has also worked with Say She She, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Scott McMicken, among others. All three Okonski releases, including 2025’s Entrance Music are out now on Colemine Records.
Composer, arranger, and songwriter Matthew Olerio began experimenting with minimal piano and synth-driven sounds in 2019. What started as improvised recordings eventually took shape as 2021’s EP Sit Soft and 2023’s LP Notes. Along the way, Erev’s sound has evolved through collaboration with friends, stretching into ambient, folk, and exotica.
In 2025, A Little Less Worse marked a departure from Erev’s previous recordings, embracing a more playful, rhythmic sound. Produced by Benny Yurco at Little Jamaica Recordings, the record is built on hand drums, auxiliary percussion, sun-warped synths, electric piano, and Balearic guitar tones.
Weaving in and out of genres has become a natural home for Erev. Across these soundscapes, a common thread emerges in tinges of nostalgia, carried by blissful melodies that evoke a sense of playful curiosity.
