Formed in 2018, they wrote and recorded two albums of short, high-energy songs, full of chiming guitars, sweet harmonies, and introspective lyrics: 2020’s Double Life and 2021’s Be Normal. While the pandemic turned many gazes inward, theirs turned outward, both to international music and the international relations, and the apocalyptic violence necessary to maintain it. The result is Neilson Family’s third full-length release, Imperial Residue. Recorded in a dank Southeast basement, it is an SOS from the belly of the beast, set over shifting tempos and odd time, as channeled from songwriter James Neilson’s gimlet eye to his acid tongue. Described as brooding melodic art rock, it is the third phase of Jonathan Suarez's songwriting career. The band now consists of Suarez (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Colleen Johnson (keys, backing vocals), Zach Cardenas (drums), and Drew Cardenas (bass). Suarez's lyrics explore themes of death, grief, unabashed honesty, escapism, and self-acceptance. Baby Grendel's new EP Timeless (Do Flowers Grow on Barren Land), out June 2026, experiments with new sounds and textures.
