Description
Philippa Pacho leads a lineup of quintessential BASEMENT artists. Pacho’s unrelenting, tensile sound perfectly captures the headrush energy of late ‘90s techno. And yet, she remains completely cutting edge, finding the timeless in the modern. This ethos is reflected in her curation for her Phorum Records, which has been issuing one critical slab after another. BASEMENT’s own resident Newa keeps it real. The Georgian producer balances finely honed focus with expansive exploration, finding pockets of devious strangeness in the midst of an immaculately propulsive set. Newa’s credentials are widely recognized - she’s also a resident of Bassiani, and she’s back in the room following their takeover last May. Holden Federico draws out every ounce of expressive power from taut, linear techno. His original tracks percolate with decisive power, while his sets stand on his unwavering pacing and unimpeachable selections.
The Spectrum returns to STUDIO for another takeover. The iconic queer collective has been responsible for some of New York’s most radical and forward-thinking nightlife projects, including two landmark venues that brought together a generation of artists, club kids, fashion designers, performers, and electronic music DJs. Their spaces became hubs for community, creative experimentation, and aesthetic radicalization, helping define the zeitgeist of their time while leaving a lasting impact on the city’s cultural and musical landscape. Now, the core organizers are bringing their vision and flavor to STUDIO. Miss Twink USA headlines the night. The Chicago artist succinctly describes their approach as “one beatdown after another,” and it’s true that their sets are full-throttle rides defined by peak time energy and raw, thundering drums. But the secret sauce is Miss Twink’s poise. They are a cool-headed, unfussed guide through a wild world. Michael Magnan returns. One half of Fatherhood (alongside Physical Therapy), Magnan is one of the city’s choicest selectors. His artistry covers the gamut from heavier, darker passages to exploratory psychedelia. But wherever he lands, Magnan finds a sweet spot where his signature sense of the strange and fascinating marbles through the mix. Danny Clobber makes his debut. On his Sign of the Times label, Clobber has presented a stunning range of work, from a full-album Madonna tribute to raw, grimy breaks. Like Spectrum, Clobber embraces the full range.
