Description
The cover for Drumcell’s 2016 album “Absence Of Appropriate Effect” shows a bloody hand with two discarded surgical gloves, set against what seems to be a concrete floor. It’s an apt visual metaphor for his music, which transmutes aggression and confrontation into something mesmerizing and elemental. Since the launch of the alias in 2004, Drumcell has been one of the most lauded artists in the ever-evolving space where noise and techno meet. His discography can be genuinely intense, but it can also be cinematic, beautiful and haunting. Stephanie Sykes brings a similar rigor to her work. A beloved proponent of immersive, hypnotic techno, Syke’s immaculate productions earn instant respect. Her considered discography isn’t saturated with releases, but in true quality-over-quanity spirit, each one is an event upon release. The elusive threehz matches these artists’ mercurial, uncompromising spirit. The NY-based DJ has a long history that winds through experimental electronics, singular sonic worldbuilding and deep collaborative works. This all comes to bear in their DJ sets, which mix cerebral loop techno, evocative textural work and nimble, roiling grooves.
STUDIO comes in hot with a lineup of local legends. The Carry Nation’s immaculate command of the dancefloor is second to none. There is a certain caliber of DJ, where impeccable selection and pristine technique meet pure soul power and a time-tested clarity of purpose. The Carry Nation stands among them. Pillars of the US queer underground, their artistry stands as an inspiration and a loving challenge to free yourself. x3butterfly’s ascent is practically a foregone conclusion. An undisputed natural, x3 harnesses the essence of dance music across its myriad forms. Their STUDIO sets are an inevitable highlight, using both intuition and deep, focused research to worldbuild. Matas threads the needle between careful restraint and brazen attitude. The Earth Dog affiliate is a dreamweaver, casting a sultry spell through billowing, cloudy textures and razor sharp accents.
