Description
This Fourth of July, two techno titans bring the fireworks to BASEMENT. Truncate and DJ Hyperactive represent alongside DAIYAH. Truncate is no stranger to BASEMENT. The LA-based artist first launched the alias over fifteen years ago to specifically focus on machine funk techno in its most undiluted form. 2010’s “Contrast” EP showed the project arriving fully formed, with a spare, minimalist aesthetic that revealed the raw power of its materials through patient, considered dynamics. Truncate is rightfully regarded as one of the most significant torchbearers for true school techno in the world today. DJ Hyperactive is a rare peer. The Chicago don is a master of the deep, bumping and captivating side of techno. Channeling his hometown’s singular approach to groove into rugged, no-nonsense propulsion, DJ Hyperactive embodies the timeless promise of dance music. Many claim to be veterans, but Hyperactive truly helped shape dance music’s DNA, even earning a shout out from Daft Punk in their seminal 2001 track “Teachers.” But he’s no throwback; last year, he and Truncate released the absolutely banging “Trust the Process” EP, a collaborative batch that’s as lean and focused as anything in his catalog. DAIYAH has evolved into one of the key architects of the modern NY sound. Although she has a wide range, with sets that address everything from hardcore to minimal Detroit, you know a DAIYAH set from the moment it kicks off. Brazen, seismic percussion sits right at the center, with searing sonics and sending the energy straight into the red.
Kevin Aviance returns to STUDIO. Avinance emerged in the ‘90s as a galvanizing figure. One of the most visible club kids of the era, Aviance pursued a career that pushed house and ballroom to their limits. Songs like “Cunty” and “Rhythm Is My Bitch” are seminal treatises on the pure physicality of dance music, with Aviance right at the center acting as commanding, catalyzing presence. His recent return to the booth has been a welcome new chapter in an already legendary career. Kim Ann Foxman is one of the most consistent and beloved figures in the dance music underground, and her productions embrace the euphoric side of house music, setting jacking percussion against languid and aqueous atmospheres. Her Firehouse label developed as a home for a teeming network of producers whose work touches these same resonant nodes, while her Pleasure Planet collaboration blends her signature sound with bumping new wave. Kilopatrah Jones steps back into the booth to do what she does best. Jones is a leading light of the modern wave of house DJs who are revitalizing the genre. She has a unique capacity to channel pure soul, tapping into house music’s core spirit.
