On their most recent offering entitled Leave Me the Same, Cuss unleashes a relentless bender of crushing yet wildly catchy atmospheric post-grunge. Dragging listeners through a swamp of influence that spans from pummeling Electric Wizard style riffing all the way to Nirvana-esque earworm hooks and beyond, Cuss hones a distinct and weighty sound on Leave Me the Same that connects to deep roots in 90s alternative and grunge that all four members of Cuss waded through in their youth.
Since the release of Dor in early 2024, Cuss has continued to evolve their brooding neo-grunge style, sharpening it into a haunting and unmistakable sound on their newest offering, Leave Me the Same. Recorded by Andy Nelson and mixed by Pete Grossman at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, Leave Me the Same also represents the first material written collectively by the full current lineup.
“The ability to create additional layers and write music beyond just myself and Chris \[drums\] in a room is great,” explains Cuss vocalist and guitarist Kurt Collins. “The addition of Brian \[guitar\] and Dan \[bass\] is just made sense for us because they are lifetime friends. There’s a kind of shorthand that comes with knowing each other a very long time. It helps squeeze out the most juice during the writing process when everyone is fully honest with each other.”
"There's a cathartic feeling to intentionally write music in the trijectory of what we grew up with, but it also just seems to occur naturally because many of the sounds and rhythms are wired into us at this point," reflects guitarist Brian Mulholland.
