Juneteenth is an American holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks June 19, 1865, the day when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free — more than two years after Emancipation Proclamation had officially declared enslaved people in Confederate states free. This milestone marks the effective end of slavery in the United States and honors the survival, culture, achievements, and resistance of Black Americans through slavery, segregation, and ongoing discrimination.
