Description
7PM | Van Django Van Django's music is well-rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930s Paris, France, but extends into pure blue-skying – flights of dazzling fancy, driving rhythms and boundless creativity. Their repertoire features original compositions and arrangements including humorous mash-ups wearing their eclectic influences in full regalia. Since the group's formation in 1998, they have toured extensively across Canada, the United States, Europe and China. The group has had repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest (2008-2016), sharing the stage with gypsy jazz luminaries including the John Jorgenson Quintet, and legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Romane. They have released four albums: Tiptoe Trip, Waltz in the Shape of a Tree, Hotel Europe and Cool Yule, a Christmas recording with special guests. Their music has been well received and played on many radio stations including CBC, Radio Canada (RDI and Espace Musique), NPR and Lyric FM in Ireland. Perhaps Nick Lehr, former director of Djangofest Northwest, summed it up best describing Van Django when he said: "In an increasingly crowded niche, Van Django is a standout act. With a clever mix of contemporary standards, classical ditties, rock homages and solid originals they effortlessly whip the audience into a joyful frenzy. Attending a Van Django concert is the most fun you can have sitting down with your clothes on." 8PM | Mallory Chipman Hailing from the Canadian prairies, Mallory Chipman is a true musical polymath. An award-winning musician as well as a songwriter, producer and music scholar, Chipman is celebrated for her acrobatic voice and the way she powerfully weaves truth and story into song. With influences from across genres, Chipman's signature sound has been described as "the finest folk-rock currently being made" (Amplify Magazine). Her 2024 album, Songs to a Wild God, hit No. 1 on CKUA and No. 5 on the Folk Alliance International charts, and has been featured on NPR and SiriusXM. Over the course of her five album career, Chipman has toured extensively and internationally, opening for artists including Jann Arden and Madeleine Peyroux. While reflecting contemporary themes, the quality of Chipman’s craft “places her amidst the longer tradition of the great singer-songwriters” (Americana UK) and has been described as "a masterclass in innovation and creativity" (Certified Bop), establishing her as an instant classic in the Canadian folk music scene. Chipman is currently nominated for Solo Artist of the Year at the 2026 Canadian Folk Music Awards. All patrons of all ages require a ticket.
