The Apricots:
The Apricots began the way many good things do: with a housing survey. Matched as freshman-year roommates in 2014, Chloé Serkissian and Molly Evered bonded over late nights, crowded dorm rooms, and a shared love of folk music and songwriting. By 2016, they were writing songs together, and in 2018, they moved to Portland in search of a music scene and a clearer sense of direction.
After a rotating cast of characters and one band name upgrade, The Apricots finally hit their stride with the release of their self-titled EP in 2023. Their songs mix indie-rock beats, folk-inspired harmonies, dreamy guitar and synth swells, and bass lines that just won’t quit. They draw inspiration from timeless artists like Paul McCartney, Simon & Garfunkel, and Crosby, Stills & Nash; while also emanating modern artists like Lucius, Joseph, Julia Jacklin, and a touch of danceable groove à la Parcels.
The Apricots are set to release their first full-length album later this year. With bassist Jeremy Reeves, guitarist Jake Mackie, and drummer Logan Hazen rounding out their sound, The Apricots are celebrating the sweet fruits of their labor—and you’re invited to take a bite.
Smokey Brights:
The first composite solid rocket fuel that eventually launched spaceships was made with asphalt, effectively paving the way to the moon. Dashboard Heat, the newest record by Seattle stalwarts Smokey Brights, embodies this funny little fact, using tough truths to slip the surly bonds of earth and, through hardship, touch the stars. Members Kim West (vocals/keys), Ryan Devlin (vocals/guitars), Luke Ragnar (bass/vocals), and Nick Krivchenia (drums) have crafted a ramshackle rocket of a record that touches upon cars, celestial forces, childhood homes, light and hope, darkness and grief. Produced by Andy D. Park in exchange for Ryan painting his recording studio, the album sees the band sonically shooting for the solar system while staying true to their grounded take on songcraft that has made them a mainstay of the Northwest scene.
Chipped Nail Polish:
Chipped Nail Polish started with an electric ukulele and a bad manicure. Jill Sullivan, the mastermind behind it all, launched the project several years ago while studying at the University of Oregon. Immersed in the school’s vibrant DIY music scene, she emerged not only with an EP, but also with a close-knit community of like-minded musicians.
For years, the band was based in Portland, OR, built around an evolving mix of friends Sullivan met throughout the Oregon music scene. The ethos of Chipped Nail Polish has always been rooted in community and connection, with live shows filled with audience participation, silly jokes, and unexpectedly tender moments.
