About Kota The Friend

Kota the Friend (born Avery Marcel Joshua Jones in Brooklyn, New York) is an independent rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer known for his introspective style and DIY approach. Inspired by artists like Jay-Z, Nas, and Kid Cudi, he began his musical journey as a trained trumpet player before transitioning into writing and performing. He built early momentum with mixtapes like Palm Tree Liquor (2016) and Paloma Beach (2017), eventually releasing projects such as FOTO, EVERYTHING, and his ongoing Lyrics to GO series, alongside collaborations like To Kill A Sunrise with Statik Selektah.
Remaining fully independent throughout his career, Kota has turned down major label deals to maintain creative control, founding his own label and brand, FLTBYS (Flight Boys). His recent work includes No Rap on Sunday, featuring artists like Big Sean and Fivio Foreign, as well as 2024 releases Once in a Blue Moon (with Statik Selektah) and Lyrics to Go 5. Known for producing much of his own music and visuals, Kota has built a global following while staying rooted in independence, with his music also appearing across major streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
