Description
Years in the making, chaotic Japanese improv artist KAE TAKAHASHI makes her Australian debut, opening her solo tour at the Oxford Art Factory’s Gallery Bar. Local support comes from NEEDLEMOUTH, SINA, a duo performance by SIMON BARKER & MITCH ELLIOTT, and DJ sets from LUCAS ABELA (as DJ Smallcock).
KAE TAKAHASHI (JPN) explores free expression beyond conventional definitions of music, combining bass-driven noise with scream vocals to investigate the psychological tension between silence and disorder. Through unpredictable sounds and rhythms, she constructs intense sonic spaces where order and chaos intersect, drawing audiences into a concentrated sensory and emotional experience. Previously, she was a vocalist and bassist in SETE STAR SEPT alongside Ryosuke Kiyasu, touring extensively across Asia, Europe, and the Americas within the noise core, free jazz, and nuts core scenes. Notable appearances include Indonesia’s Bones Festival, Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China, and the International Noise Conference in Florida.
SIMON BARKER & MITCH ELLIOTT perform together for the first time, bringing together distinct yet intersecting approaches to improvisation, texture, and sonic exploration. Since 1990, Simon Barker has performed regularly throughout Australia, Europe, Asia, and the US, and has produced a large collection of solo drumming recordings alongside numerous ongoing collaborative projects including Chiri, Showa 44, and duos with Scott Tinkler and Hinano Fujisaki. In 2024 and 2025, Mitch Elliott toured Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, China, and Hong Kong as a solo Lyra-8 performer. He is a member of the Sydney-based improv groups withdrawe and Black Metal 3, has collaborated with Japanese improvisors Sayaka Botanic and Morishige Yasumune, and most recently debuted in Vietnam with Nguyễn Võ Tấn Quang.
A NEEDLEMOUTH is a hungry ghost reborn into the afterlife as a creature with unbearable hunger and thirst. Consigned to never sate their desires due to a throat the size of a needle, Needlemouth combines masochistic constraint with the ecstatic force of feedback. Needlemouth is the noise project of Marcus Whale.
SINA melds hazy ambient textures with shoegazed guitar and vocals. She is also a member of the swampy-dub band, Dregs. Sina captured audiences at the sold out Voice Actor show earlier this year, and subsequently headlined the FBi Radio collab with Metro Theatre.
LUCAS ABELA performs as DJ Smallcock. There is an inherent randomness to Abela’s DJ act: original audio files interact with each other, and depending on the relative pitch he chooses, you get somewhat different results each time they are squeezed through the proverbial sausage maker.
ENTUNDRA is a curatorial project promoting cross-pollination between experimental and noise-adjacent music cultures. The first edition of entundra presented local jazz icons Hinano Fujisaki and Jacques Emery alongside Japanese improv legends Sayaka Botanic and HUH. Entundra is proud to present KAE TAKAHASHI to headline the second edition of the series.
We acknowledge that this event is held on the stolen lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. We pay our respects to Elders, past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.
