Though his earlier roots were in dubbier and loopier territory, over recent years he’s evolved to embrace a stark, thundering sound. Masterfully textured, Rødhåd’s productions suggest both a tectonic scale and lithe, quicksilver movement. On his own WSNWG label, he’s embraced collaboration, working with many of the best names from the next generation. These can offer welcome stretches to his already-accomplished template, but the core of deeply hued, hypnotic techno always remains. Rene Wise is one of the best younger names making taut, grooving loop techno today. Whether releasing on pivotal imprints like Token or his own Moving Pressure label, Wise’s innate mastery of psychedelic forms and curling, organic textures is truly exceptional. His productions invoke the density of a tropical rainforest, teeming with life and dense with humidity, and Wise himself has even commented that “a lot of people tell me that my sound is like techno from the jungle. I’d like to think that this is quite an accurate description, I’m all about those jungle rhythms.” Quelza takes the night off from his main gig as a world class techno artist to deliver a special house set. One of the most cinematic producers working in the field today, Quelza’s strength is balancing heaving scale with a painterly touch. But beneath the awe-inspiring scale, there’s a grooviness at play that transcends the strictures of capital-T techno.
