Description
Since its 2018 founding, Mala Junta has been at the vanguard of queer raving. Foregrounding a bracing, modern sound, the Berlin series has cultivated some of the most exciting artists working in the genre today. This May, they return for a full venue takeover that brings in some of the collective’s key names alongside special guests. Resident DJ TOOL is a name that should be familiar to all BASEMENT attendees. His high-velocity mixture of gritty modern sounds, twisting trance-tinged techno and leftfield bangers is delivered with a subversive sensibility. His sets rip right through the space, bringing an urgency and poise that cannot be ignored. Fellow Mala Junta resident Yazzus joins him. One of the most gleefully defiant DJs of our time, Yazzus revels in upending expectations. Whether weaving in concussive breaks, slamming out merciless techno or chopping up My Chemical Romance for a club edit, Yazzus’ fearlessness has made her an essential voice. Bapari returns to complete the lineup. A true polymath, Bapari has by turns reveled in searing hardcore rave, high-speed euphoria and, on last year’s “Evermore,” mercurial downtempo. Beyond their solo work, Bapari was a collaborator on FKA Twigs’ landmark “Eusexua” LP last year. But, when the time is right, Bapari can absolutely rip a techno set. As their artistry grows, they remain steadfastly rooted in the best of club culture.
Mexican duo Zombies In Miami returns to headline STUDIO. Their productions have landed them on some of the best labels in house music today: Running Back, Fabric, Live at Robert Johnson and many more. It makes sense; their musicality is beyond reproach, and their unique sound hits a sweet spot between pumping disco house, Dutch-style electro, shimmering synth-centric rave explorations and classic grooves. Fearlessly lifting from euro-dance tropes alongside urgent, rushing funk, Zombies In Miami are invariably a refreshing presence. Kim Ann Foxman is an artist who similarly cannot be boxed in. There’s a strong current of acid running through her work, but just as present is a stargazing sense of wonder, ‘80s-esque romance and thick, thumping Chicago-style deep dish grooves. She has been a presence in STUDIO since its earliest days, drawing on her quarter century in NY clubs and as a global performer. Local mayhem purveyor DJ Miss Parker wastes no time turning the dancefloor out. Whether casting an evocative spell or summoning pure chaos, DJ Miss Parker always brings a livewire spirit to the booth.
