Description
We continue our weekend with a lineup that honors one of the architects of techno. Juan Atkins returns to the room. Only a handful of artists can truly claim to have launched a whole genre, and Atkins is one of them. The Detroit pioneer helped kick off the techno movement with Cybotron’s 1981 “Alleys Of Your Mind,” followed by 1983’s album “Enter.” The oldest of the Belleville Three, alongside Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, Atkins would lead the evolution of techno from its raw electropop origins into the form we recognize today. His solo and collaborative works under his own name, Model 500, Infiniti and others are essential listening, and his label curation for his own Metroplex includes some of the genre’s key releases. He’s joined by Holden Federico, a NY-based artist who keeps the visionary spirit alive. Federico’s stunning solo productions and longform sets hew closely to the core strictures of techno, finding liberation in limitation. Federico could be described as a techno purist, but his devotion to the genre reveals a creative path forward that appears limitless. Rose Kourts elevates the eclectic, playing with a starling range that is rooted in undeniable soul power. Although she can take on any genre with fluency, Rose Kourts’ techno sets stand with the best of them. Rose Kourts has distinguished herself by her deep digging, technical rigor and thematic clarity, and her sets in BASEMENT are always fresh, vibrant and psychedelic journeys.
Jennifer Loveless steps into the booth in STUDIO for the first time. A breakout of Australia's lauded club scene, Loveless’ music embraces the flowy, liquid psychedelia while adding her own signature. Her tracks can range from explosive disco house to heady explorations of soulful, aqueous groove. This range translates across her sets, which put a distinctly modern spin on the blissed-out perfection of classic house. x3butterfly’s world-building approach to DJing has made the Mexican-born, NY-based artist a globally-recognized talent. Whether tapping into classic house, modern club, throbbing bass or modern post-ambient composition, x3butterfly always sounds like themselves. Their sets embrace a mixture of communal uplift and a personal, subjective curiosity that is undeniably compelling. Josh Steers returns from Mexico City with a bag of pure club heaters in tow. An artist with roots in the NY underground, Steers has embraced heavy Latin funk, mixing it with the raw, pumping sounds of his hometown.
