Description
This May, BASEMENT hosts our second night showcasing Tresor. One of the most important institutions in the history of techno, Tresor first opened the doors to its first location in 1991, the same year it released its first record: X-101’ self-titled EP. That record, a collaboration between Jeff Mills, Mike Banks and Robert Hood, signaled a new era of techno. Tresor was positioned from day one at the vanguard, and over the next decades the club and label evolved into one of the genre’s most significant institutions. Tresor saw the future and helped to shape the world we live in today.
Rrose is one of modern techno’s truly visionary artists. Since early touchstone releases on Sandwell District, the producer has gone deeper and deeper into hypnotic, avant garde works that draw on auditory phenomenon, psychoacoustic illusions and spectral composition. Over a series of exceptional albums, released on their own Eaux label, Rrose has perfected a vision of techno as a writhing, organic lifeform. A recent contribution to Octo Octa and Eris Drew’s T4T LUV NRG bucks the housier template of that label in favor of an EP of startling psychedelia. Dustin Zahn returns to BASEMENT, repping the fathoms deep tradition of uncompromising Midwest techno. As the key organizer behind The Great Beyond - one of North America’s best electronic camping festivals - and the founder of Enemy Records, Zahn has established himself as an essential cultural force. His journeying DJ sets and immaculate productions make good on the promise of techno as pure sonic force. Zahn harnesses the storm. quest?onmarq joins the lineup. The US-born, Berlin-based artist was, for many years, a key part of NY’s electronic underground. Tresor resident quest?onmarq is back in town. From the beginning of their career, quest?onmarq has pursued a rigorously experimental approach, fusing undeniable rhythmic propulsion with defiant sonic explorations. “Solar Flare,” released on Tresor, is a prime example. quest?onmarq harnesses gnarly distortion and a lean, tunneling groove to make something that balances technos’ formal tradition with its originating, radical spirit. Henry Chow makes his debut. Chow is one of those artists whose relationship to techno is deeply rooted and utterly authentic. A longtime mover in the US underground, Chow has been active since the early ‘00s. His Crossroads series was a major hub for techno in Texas, and now that he is based in NYC, Chow is a close affiliate of the Miss Softee parties. He is a regular performer at The Great Beyond, on the key bastions of true school Midwest raving.
Tresor residents Sanctuary return once again to head up an immaculate lineup that covers some of the best of modern house. Sanctuary is the duo of LHJ & Marcelino, the brains behind the Life Classics label. In their collaboration, they cover the terrains both deep and breezy, teasing out house music’s most refreshing qualities. They are long-time regulars of Tresor’s non-techno space Globus, a world class venue in its own right. JADALAREIGN has become a pillar of NYC’s house underground. Through both her exemplary sets and non-stop community building, JADA has forged a singular path. Few draw out the raw psychedelic of house quite like she does; She is a storyteller and a sorceress, and the spiritual and political urgency of house finds full voice in her sets. Justin Cudmore returns to STUDIO. Cudmore is many things: a talented producer with solo releases on esteemed imprints like The Bunker New York, Honey Soundsystem, Interdimensional Transmissions and more, and a member of The Majorettes alongside The Carry Nation. At the center of it all sits his DJing, which balances throbbing, libidinous tension and pure, bumping groove. In a word, Cudmore is devious. Even as he weaves his sets together with surgical precision, he always makes sure you feel it on a visceral level.
