Defined by its shuffled, syncopated rhythms, chopped vocal samples, and tempos hovering around 130 BPM, UKG was born in ‘90s London and has since spawned subgenres from speed garage and 2-step to the darker strains that seeded grime and dubstep. Today, a fresh wave of DJs has continued to push the sound into fresh, expected territories. For this UKG edition of Focus, Manchester DJ and producer Anz visits the booth with her versatile take on contemporary UK club music. She’s joined by two New York stalwarts: Don-Ri, an Irish-born, New York-based DJ and founder of Twist; and DJ Shannon, a resident of Radio Bonita and The Lot Radio, and host of the Club Management interview podcast. /// RSVP is $10 before 11pm and $15 before midnight. During parties the driveway gate is locked, so please ask staff at the street entrance for assistance with entry. All of our bathrooms are gender-neutral. There is one accessible stall indoors. Just ask any Nowadays staff member for the key, and they can show you the way. During parties, seating is available both on and off the dance floor. While we don’t have a dedicated quiet space indoors during parties, the booths next to coat check are a little quieter, and the deck and back yard a little quieter than that. Most nighttime parties include the use of strobe lights and water based haze.
