UK-based experimental vocalist, musician, and multi-instrumentalist Penelope Trappes, formally trained in opera and jazz in her youth, creates brooding atmospherics and unsettling poetics underpinned by subterranean drone. Her fifth full-length album, ‘A Requiem’ on London imprint, One Little Independent, collects ten haunting incantations of dreams and nightmares, of death and grief, as well as power and autonomy. Carnal, transcendent cello drones are used to exorcise generational traumas in an evocative and macabre piece of gothic experimentalism.
Anna Johnson is a Chicago-based experimental musician and visual artist. She is drawn to the meeting points between personal and mythical, present and ancient. Based in drone and hypnotic repetition, her sound unites electroacoustic improvisation with backgrounds in Celtic and Anglo folk traditions and sacred medieval music. Anna’s performances are augmented by her original projection designs, which feature layered, textural abstractions of light and shadow. Her approach to live performance is ritualistic; she seeks embodied and communal experiences of intensity, vulnerability and spiritual catharsis.
Presented by Sleeping Village.
