Jeremy Rose Infinity x Sabine Tapia’s Koro
International Jazz Day — The Vanguard, Sydney — April 30
On April 30, as cities around the world mark International Jazz Day, two distinctive voices in Sydney’s contemporary jazz landscape come together for a special double bill at The Vanguard, featuring ARIA Award-winning saxophonist-composer Jeremy Rose’s Infinity alongside rising star Sabine Tapia’s Koro.
Reflecting the spirit of International Jazz Day - celebrating jazz as a living, evolving art form - this concert brings together two projects that push beyond tradition, embracing new textures, forms and collective approaches to improvisation.
Jeremy Rose – Infinity
Jeremy Rose’s Infinity operates at the outer edges of jazz, ambient and electronica - a project built around long-form improvisation, cyclical structures and evolving sonic textures. Across two critically acclaimed releases, including Infinity II, Rose has developed a language that dissolves the boundaries between composition and improvisation, creating music that unfolds as a continuous, immersive gesture.
Described by DownBeat as “a meditative experience… mesmerizing” (★★★★), and by Jazzwise as “a bold, adventurous journey… offering many rewards in terms of musicianship and sonic ambition” , Infinity sits within a new wave of artists blurring the lines between improvised music and ambient electronic forms.
For this performance, Infinity appears as a quartet featuring Rose alongside keyboardist Zac Sandilands, drummer Gabriel Haslam (Manfredo Lament), and modular synthesist Ben Carey — whose textural, otherworldly electronic palette has become central to the project’s sonic identity. Together, the ensemble moves fluidly between meditative stillness and rhythmic propulsion, with Rose’s saxophone — shaped through harmonisers, delay and reverb — weaving through layered electronic and acoustic environments.
Drawing on influences from improvised minimalism, ambient electronic music and the exploratory traditions of artists such as The Necks, SML, and Floating Points collaboration with the LSO and Pharoah Sanders, Infinity invites audiences into a deep listening experience where time is stretched, refracted and reimagined. Rose’s approach emphasises subtle transformation over overt gesture, allowing small musical ideas to evolve organically into expansive forms.
Together, these two projects embody the breadth of contemporary jazz practice in 2026 - from song-based, voice-led composition to expansive, ambient-inflected improvisation - offering a compelling snapshot of where the music is heading.
“As one of Australia’s most critically lauded and prolific jazz musicians, saxophonist Jeremy Rose appears to be in a constant state of musical evolution.” JAZZWISE UK
Sabine Tapia – Koro
Koro, meaning “choir” in Tagalog, is a new, inventive seven-piece ensemble led by bassist, composer, and vocalist Sabine Tapia. Showcasing rich harmonic language and patiently shaped song forms, Koro features some of Sydney’s most exciting young musicians and improvisers, including Arlo Sim (vocals), Elise Nolte (vocals), Samantha Baxendale (vocals), Harley Coleman (guitar), Thomas Odell (piano), and Matt Simmonds (drums).
Through Koro explores the textural possibilities of multiple voices at the forefront of the ensemble’s sound. From this emerges a carefully balanced blend of contemporary jazz, folk, and ambient music, creating a sonic world of striking emotional depth.
