Plankton Wat began in the early 2000's as an Ambient Psychedelic home recording project by Portland, Oregon musician Dewey Mahood (Eternal Tapestry, Rose City Band, etc), releasing several tapes and CDs, and playing solo guitar gigs along the West Coast. This early period of the band was strongly influenced by 1970's Krautrock, ambient experiments by Brian Eno, and the more abstract side of John Fahey. After his Psych Rock band Eternal Tapestry signed with Chicago label Thrill Jockey in 2010, Plankton Wat also made the jump to the legendary label, and released the critically acclaimed album Spirits in 2012. This led to Mahood touring extensively in Europe and on the East Coast, and a second Thrill Jockey solo outing Drifter's Temple.
In 2020, Mahood created the album Future Times with fellow Portland musicians Dustin Dybvig (Brass Clouds, Rose City Band), and Victor Nash (Orquestra Pacifico Tropical, The Decemberists). The album was widely celebrated as an Experimental Music classic. This led to the creation of the current 4-piece rock band lineup of the project with the addition of bassist James Shaver (Abronia), and the recording of a new album The Vanishing World out March 20th on Los Angeles based label Sun Cru. The band's current sound borrows much from 1970's Progressive Rock, Jazz Fusion, and classic heavy Psych Rock.
