Description
Man or Astro-man? crash landed in Alabama in 1991 and quickly developed a reputation for high-velocity instrumental music paired with vintage electronics and a visual language drawn from old school science fiction. Oscilloscopes, theremins, Tesla coils, and other salvaged analog equipment became part of the band’s sound and stage setup from the beginning.
Across innumerable releases on labels such as Estrus and Touch and Go, Man or Astro-man? built a catalog of tightly constructed instrumental tracks balancing melody, speed, and experimentation.
During the 1990s the band was widely regarded as one of the most heavily touring groups of the decade, playing thousands of shows all across the world. Their recordings and sessions for BBC Radio 1’s John Peel, who counted the band among his favorite acts, helped introduce the group to audiences well beyond the American underground.
In recent years the band has released new material including the Space 1991 EP and the Distant Pulsar EP, along with a 2025 box set collecting their Peel Sessions recordings.
After a brief hibernation period, Man or Astro-man? returns in 2026 with new music and new stage experiments, with shows scheduled throughout the summer and tours planned for the fall.
