Description
We all use language every day, but how often do we think about it? How often do you consider its ongoing evolution, how it works, who and what shapes it, and where it might go next.
This event features presentations by two people who think deeply about language every day in different ways. One is a designer working at the cutting edge of communication on a global scale. The other is a copywriter here in Birmingham, crafting the text that helps organizations charm, convince, and cajole you.

JENNIFER DANIEL's name may not ring a bell, but her work is at the tip of your thumb every day. As the Chair of the Emoji Subcommittee for the Unicode Consortium, Jennifer helps decide what new emojis make it into our digital devices.
In her day job as a Creative Director at Google she worked on the lively Material 3 Expressive design system for Android. She’s of course on the Emoji team at Google as well, designing their platforms’ version of the digital hieroglyphs in their standard and Emoji Kitchen versions. She ponders and pontificates about Emoji at jenniferdaniel.substack.com/
In her presentation, Jennifer will explore how emoji are designed, standardized, and evolve over time, and why they remain essential in an era of memes, GIFs, and AI-generated images. Through stories of recent additions and cultural shifts, she highlights how these tiny symbols shape the way we communicate, feel, and connect.

JORDAN SOWARDS is an accomplished copywriter, with 20 years of experience in agencies from Birmingham to New York City. He’s been the lead writer for two different businesses in the Fortune 200 and has won a raft of local and regional Addys and was Birmingham’s 2015 Copywriter of the Year.
Responsible for parking lot poetics, juicy text about Vulcan’s famous feature, and at least one talking bird, Jordan kicks the night off talking about “F@#% Letter Words.”
After Jennifer’s presentation there will be a conversation and Q&A with the audience.

This is the second event in a series which aims to highlight the impact and presence of Design in our daily lives. We included our writer friends this time, too, since we work together so much.
Although it’s organized under the auspices of Graphic Designer Happy Hour, this event and others in this series are open to anyone intrigued by the topics presented. Come grab a drink when doors open to hang out with other people interested in the same things you are.
