A former rock drummer turned mallet-slinger, she came up through Oakland School for the Arts before heading to New York City to study at The New School under vibraphonist Stefon Harris—sharpening a style that blends harmony, edge, and intention. She broke onto the scene with appearances at major jazz festivals and quickly made waves as the first U.S. recipient of the LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award, leading to her acclaimed debut Azalea. Praised for its shimmering, genre-blurring sound, the record set the tone for a career built on bold ideas and fearless exploration. Named the youngest—and first female—winner of DownBeat’s Rising Star: Vibraphone, Berliner has since become a mainstay on critics’ and readers’ polls alike.
