Description
We invite you to join us Thursday, February 5, at Public Records to celebrate with us the launch of Respekt Music’s label and the release of **Daniel Carter** and **N/UM**’s *Sphēra* album, with the album musicians in session. Recorded live in Brooklyn in 2024, *Sphēra* takes listeners on a spontaneous and daring journey through generations of improvised music. It’s a telepathic meeting between the mellowed-out, octogenarian free jazz legend and the experienced trio, and we’re overjoyed to revisit it live for the first time since their initial performance.
Daniel Carter has been a force in New York’s underground free jazz scene since the 70s, emerging in groups alongside fellow legends like WIlliam Parker to push the then-fallow jazz scene forward into its next decades. By 2000, his unconventional ideas took him outside jazz entirely and into collaborating with electronic, hip-hop, rock, and noise musicians: El-P, DJ Spooky, Yo La Tengo, Yoko Ono, Spring Heel Jack, and many others, sustaining his later career. He continues to appear both alongside the downtown legends he came up with and in new, innovative settings, a rare feat in contemporary jazz.
Familiar to frequenters of Brooklyn’s underground club circuit, N/UM are a New York-based electronic trio comprised of producer Jeremy Loucas, guitarist Elias Meister, and multi-instrumentalist/producer Emil Bovbjerg, whose shared passion for improvised electronic music led them to distinction in this rarely-explored niche. Active since 2017 with several albums and singles to their credit, N/UM stretch the structures of club music far past conventions, creating a sound where familiar elements are employed in unexpected ways and taking improvised music into nightclubs, underground warehouse parties, and festivals for acclaimed appearances across the US and Europe.
