Quicksand I
Inaugurating a party where DJs move the crowd with sparing recourse to functional dance music and intensity is understood in terms other than hard and fast.
We’ve invited a pair of our favorite locals to interpret the theme: DJ CZ, selector/writer/party starter/scene lynchpin, and jcore, rising star with tekkerz for days. colson, Quicksand resident, kicks off proceedings.
Let’s throw some weird shapes.
DJ CZ
DJ CZ (aka Chris Zaldua) is a writer, DJ, event producer, and music obsessive based in San Francisco, CA. He co-founded three event series (Surface Tension, Vague Terrain, stratus) and a record label (Left Hand Path), all focused on the liminal, the interstitial, and the in-between. He writes and publishes a music newsletter-journal called Thoughts of a Certain Sound, and has previously been published in Resident Advisor, XLR8R, FACT Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, SF Weekly, KQED, Red Bull Music Academy, Noisey/Vice, and beyond. Recent DJ mix highlights include recorded podcasts for The Bunker New York, Mysteries of the Deep, and Honey Soundsystem.
jcore
For jcore, the ideal dancefloor is a sanctuary. Based in San Francisco, she wears many hats: DJ, sound tech, event organizer, and more. As a member of the Braket collective, she co-produces underground raves for underserved communities of queer and trans dancers with a particular emphasis on high-quality, DIY sound and lighting setups. Her taste reflects her interest in sonic tactility: while you can hear her spin anything from a bouncy techno groove to a swung, bass-heavy shuffle, her sets are united by a focus on unorthodox sound design, precise mixing, and full utilization of the sound system.
colson
Quicksand resident. Chuggers and left field sonics. Spectral. Gothic. Shimmering. Seabirds swallowed by yesterday’s salt air. Chiming laughter, faint and fading. Chromed bleeps piercing humid fug. Gestures at meaning, just out of reach. Party music?
