“I had a crazy idea and was looking for musicians who perhaps didn’t think it was so insane.”– Dave Alvin
Starting five years ago as a wishful music fantasy, The Third Mind, a super group deemed “Californian Psychedelic Rockers” by Doom Charts, has now become a powerful and thrilling sonic reality.
While The Third Mind may be a supergroup—the recording group consists of Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Alvin (The Blasters), bassist Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker), drummer Michael Jerome (Richard Thompson, John Cale), guitarist David Immerglück (Counting Crows, John Hiatt), and singer/songwriter Jesse Sykes (Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter)—the quintet’s mesmerizing third studio album, Right Now!, released on September 19, 2025, is as ego-less a record as you’ll find. Captured over four days in LA, the collection is a masterclass in being present, in letting go of control and embracing the thrill of collaboration. The recordings represent a singular moment completely unscripted, completely unrehearsed—and the performances are as unpredictable as they are engrossing, blurring the lines between psychedelic rock, folk, blues, and soul on tunes from artists as diverse as Elizabeth Cotton and Pharoah Sanders.
Inspired by the improvisational albums of Miles Davis, Alvin and Krummenacher started the band as an experiment, inviting some of their most talented friends for a free-form session that would become The Third Mind’s self-titled 2020 debut album. This album earned acclaim from Glide Magazine who claimed “they may just be the coolest jam band out there right now,” while Magnet Magazine later exclaimed “Not so much a supergroup as a great fucking band...”
Following the band’s live debut at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and the 2023 release of The Third Mind 2 the band captured a series of tour dates in 2025’s for a sprawling live album - TheThird Mind - Live Mind, which also featured guitarist Mark Karan (Ratdog, Phil Lesh). who performs in the touring version of The Third Mind in place of Immerglück.
Hailed as a “must-see” performance by the San Francisco Chronicle, The Third Mind made their live debut performance at the 2023 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco’s legendary Golden Gate Park, which CBS News Bay Area proclaimed “a spectacular performance.” A 10-date West Coast tour followed the festival garnering rave reviews including Twangville who noted, “if you want to experience a set of musicians at the top of their game improvising down a psychedelic rabbit hole, go catch The Third Mind.”
It has become clear that these shows are not to be missed! Returning to the West Coast in March 2026 with their one-of-a-kind “…sonic bliss which may serve to rearrange one’s notions of what the jam-to-end-all-jams is about” (Relix), The Third Mind will celebrate new releases, the critically-acclaimed Right Now! (released in September 2025), and Spellbinder! , the companion album to Right Now!, out March 13 on Yep Roc Records.
Blues fusion for the soul. The Hot Mountain Dips stay true to classic San Francisco with original free-form funkified bluesy grooves similar to the jam bands of the '60s and '70s. Their originals have taken the Bay Area by storm blossoming from this particular union of talent that dips deep down into that greasy loud rock-n-roll of generations past. Constantly striving to be atypical the Dips feature a lead vocalist on drums with ripping slide guitar and bass lines dipping through extended periods of improvisation. Their debut album is on its way with special guest Pete Grant (Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage) and engineered by Oz Fritz (Oysterhead, Tom Waits, Primus, Les
Claypool, Ramones, Iggy Pop).
The Dips have played memorable shows on the famed stages of The Chapel, Great American Music Hall, Sweetwater Music Hall, Slim's, North Beach Festival, Ocean Beach Festival, Telegraph Ave Festival, Hopmonk Sebastopol, Lost Sierra Hoedown Festival, Just Exactly Perfect Festival, Aint Necessarily Dead Festival, June Lake Jam Festival, High Sierra Music Festival, SF’s Jerry Day, Love in the Dream Festival and
Descend on Lost Sierra Festival.
As the most dipicated dippers and dipheads say, never miss a dipset! So spread these dips to those in need, get ready for some true SF-born unhinged improvisation, and come GET YOUR DIPS.
