w/ DJ Jumbo
After years in the studio, Tony Ozier is out of the lab with new work and a fresh lineup on stage. Tonight we present the enigmatic Dookie Jam progenitor and current musical director for the Pharcyde in collaboration with the legendary first daughter of PDX Funk and R&B, Arietta Ward. A force throughout Portland’s vast musical communities, Mz. Etta carries the tradition of her mother, Janice Marie Scroggins, a foundational pianist, composer, and educator in Albina.
…and on the wheels of steel is DJ Jumbo of the iconic Lifesavas crew!
Presented in collaboration w/ Etta’s World Entertainment
Arietta Ward
There are people who know how to take the tragic and make it magic. Arietta Ward is one of those people. The eldest daughter of the late, legendary Janice Scroggins, the sudden loss of her mother became the catalyst to solidifying her space on the stage – a space that Arietta, commonly known as Mz. Etta, has already occupied for years.
Alongside everyone who is anyone in Portland’s multi genre music scene, Mz. Etta has been a staple. From Linda Hornbuckle to LaRhonda Steele, Ken DeRouchie, Tony Ozier, and Norman Sylvester, Arietta has shared the stage with the elite and on her own merit. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone affiliated with jazz, soul, funk or R&B that doesn’t know who she is. Yet only now is she on the cusp of releasing her debut solo album, a body of carefully crafted musical masterpieces.
Tony Ozier
Multi-instrumentalist and producer Tony Ozier is Texas-raised and Northwest-planted. Living in Portland for the past decade, he has grown his reputation for putting on one of the stankiest shows in town. Doo Doo Funk is his self-titled musical style, and 2017 promises even more of it.
Hailing from a musical family, Tony's late grandfather toured the country as a gospel singer, and Tony grew up playing drums in church and school. But it was not until he dropped out of college that he began to play the piano and consider music a viable career path. He taught himself to play on a piano at his father's house, and then one day a friend showed him how to make beats. He immediately knew music production was his future. He moved across the country to complete a degree in studio engineering, and has been on the move since, working as an engineer, producer, and touring musician, while continuously developing and fine-tuning his own sound. Backed by his powerful 10-piece band, The Doo Doo Funk Allstars, Tony's high energy and musical imagination shine bright. He is one of the founder's of the Portland Black Music Festival, and regularly works with groups such as Beats Lyrics Leaders to bring musical experiences to youth.
