About Old 97's
Website | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | Spotify | Apple Music
Old 97’s have long stood as one of alt-country’s most enduring and influential bands, blending power-pop hooks with Texas-bred twang and emotionally charged storytelling. Emerging in the mid-1990s with albums like Wreck Your Life and their major-label breakthrough Too Far to Care, they quickly became leaders of the alt-country movement. Despite never fully crossing into the mainstream, the band built a devoted fan base through relentless touring and a catalog of spirited, sharp-edged records. Over the decades, they’ve continued to evolve while maintaining their signature sound, delivering standout releases such as Most Messed Up (2014), the introspective Twelfth (2020), and the free-wheeling American Primitive (2024).
Formed around the partnership of Rhett Miller and Murry Hammond—with Ken Bethea’s unmistakable guitar work and Philip Peeples’ driving drums—Old 97’s grew out of the Dallas music scene, honing a style that merges folk, pop, and classic country influences. While band members have explored solo projects and weathered major personal challenges, their commitment to the group has never wavered. Their longevity has brought notable milestones, from collaborations with Waylon Jennings to a memorable cameo in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Through it all, Old 97’s remain a dynamic live act and a steady creative force, continually proving why they’re one of alt-country’s most resilient and beloved bands.
