With sci-fi lyrics, wordplay twists and infectious beats, they came out of the gate hot with their first album, The New Speed, on Chicago label Sugarfree. Produced and mixed by the bay area’s Jeff Saltzman, they quickly lit the I-5 corridor on fire with instant crowd favorites and college airplay. They crammed their first tours into a 1975 Volvo sedan, defying pigeonholes and surviving on donut holes. It wasn’t long before Saltzman moved up to Portland to become the full time keyboardist, and before their next album was born they also were joined by another in-band producer, Heatmiser’s Tony Lash, on drums. This move allowed drummer Jonathan Drews to move over to lead guitar, and the band were able to replicate their lush studio arrangements in a live setting. Their follow-up album, Boyscout Superhero, was self produced in bassist Eric Furlong’s house. They spent their entire recording budget on recording equipment and spent two months laying down what would be the defining moment of this five-piece pop powerhouse. “We attacked one song at a time,” says Jolly, “I’d come in with a 4-track demo and a few days later we’d have this little song universe with its own unique vibe.” The strength of this record, along with their arresting performances in L.A., led to their signing with RCA subsidiary Kneeling Elephant Records and Everclear’s management. When major label internal structures imploded as was the fad in 2000, tour mates Death Cab For Cutie led the way for Seattle’s Barsuk Records to pick them up and release another rock masterpiece, Ice Pond. Having working industry producers in the band caused multiple line-up shifts and a lack of national touring, but also made them focus more on the art of recording. All five members remained friends and came together for occasional reunion shows, and this seven year break they just took is the longest one yet. The first ever vinyl release of Boyscout Superhero by Portland label Cascade Archives has brought the quintet back together to celebrate 30 years in the valley and to usher into existence this limited deluxe pressing remaster of the 1998 classic. Donovan Breakwater: Donovan Breakwater is a maker of Melodramatic Popular Song, founded in 2002 by Portland born and raised Musician and Engineer Nalin Silva. Joined in the Mid aughts by sister and PDX theater staple Jayne Elaine Stevens on vocals. A handful of releases, a pile of face melting shows, a front row seat to the past couple decades of Portland Music and a heavier heart to show for it!
