After years of chasing goals that never quite materialized, David Ramirez has returned to making music purely for the joy of it. The Austin-based singer-songwriter, known for his six acclaimed albums and collaborations including supergroup Glorietta, took time away from writing following the end of a long relationship. “The last thing I wanted was to write a heartbreak record,” he says. “I wanted the next thing to be hopeful and beautiful—a testament to music and my love for it.”
That testament is All the Not So Gentle Reminders, a lush, dreamlike collection recorded at Spectra Studios in Cedar Park, TX, co-produced with Christopher Boosahda. Written during a quiet retreat in rural Alabama, the 12-song album explores memory, dreams, fleeting romance, and the power of music itself. Songs like “Maybe It Was All a Dream” and “Deja Voodoo” blur the lines between reality and imagination, while “Music Man” reflects on Ramirez’s lifelong devotion to sound and song.
Built on live, organic performances from a close circle of Austin musicians, All the Not So Gentle Reminders is Ramirez’s most expansive and life-affirming work to date—an album born not of ambition, but of gratitude. “I’ve seen enough of the business to know that chasing its praises only leads to disappointment,” he says. “Now, I’m back in my chi—making music for music’s sake.”
