Description
Evanti Presents: Otherworldly Ambiguity Featuring Berlin-based legend, Function with support from techno surrealists, Shanti and Scum.ee on November 28th, 9-2am at Podlasie Club. *Tickets will be sold at the door.
"One of techno's true underground heroes, Function (Dave Sumner) has been DJing and making music for over 25 years. He is a founding member of the Sandwell District collective, Ostgut recording artist and owner of Infrastructure.
Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno when Jeff Mills held residency (as well as his own first) at Limelight in the early 90s. Producing from the mid-90s onward, he released his first 12″s on Damon Wild’s Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint. A chance meeting in 1996 brought him together with Regis (Karl O’Connor). The two worked as Portion Reform, releasing uncompromising music on Downwards, making him the only non-Birmingham producer to appear on the label. He later moved to Berlin in 2007, still working with Regis, and Silent Servant (Juan Mendez), putting his focus on Sandwell District. Since, the label come collective, skyrocketed into cult status – decentralizing the artist ego, blurring the lines between the artist, label and dj; re-arranging the DNA of modern dance music.”
We are incredibly elated to have one of the world’s most talented techno artists here for Otherworldly Ambiguity in Chicago. Dance your Black Friday angst out with us and immerse yourself in transcendent realm.
Otherworldly ambiguity is the phenomenon of liminality, occupying the spaces in between and outside of pre-existing concepts and rigid categories. By embracing our ambiguous condition, we are entranced by boundaryless identities and ways of being. The dance floor becomes the site of embracing one’s otherworldliness and hybridity through movement and community.
*Shanti has made textured waves in Chicago’s techno scene with her curation of dark, sinister, and ethereal soundscapes. Music has always been a means of coping with the otherness and hybridity Shanti experienced throughout her life. She has been deeply moved by the transcendent ability of music to express concepts, states of consciousness, and conflicting emotions. Shanti’s sets weave a story of the simultaneous despair and yearning that are intertwined with the human condition and illustrate an intentional trajectory through combining and cultivating surreal, atmospheric, and haunting sounds.
Enamored by the liminal dynamics of sound, she cohosts Otherworldly Ambiguity with Scum.ee - an experience that is centered around the phenomenon of existing in between and outside of pre-existing concepts and rigid categories. She is also a member of techno collective Research & Development and hosts a monthly radio show, “Liminal Radio” on WIIT 88.9 FM featuring thoughtful artists at the core of Chicago’s underground music scene.
