ALBUM LAUNCH
Ruth Hazleton brings her latest darkfolk album project Heronbones to the stage, featuring Naarm instrumentalist & producer Dan West on live electronics + beats and pieces.
Heronbones is a collection of stories (both traditional and composed), told through soundscape and word - where tradition becomes porous, and voices from the past resonate powerfully in the present. Drawing from deep wells of folklore and trad song, Hazleton reshapes these narratives through a darkfolk lens, blending electronic sampling and sound design with guitar and banjo. The album and project realises an artistic vision seeded many years ago, inspired by 90s downbeat, electronica and triphop.
A Naarm/Melbourne-based singer, banjo player, guitarist and songwriter, Hazleton has remained a prominent figure in Australia’s folk music scene for over 30 years. Known for her appearances with several high-profile Australian acts (Kate Burke & Ruth Hazleton, Closet Klezmer & Dev’lish Mary), Ruth has toured nationally and internationally (UK, Ireland and America), released eleven studio albums and made guest appearances on many more.
Artists Ruth has recorded and performed with over the years include: Andy Irvine (Ireland – Planxty, Mozaik), Bruce Molsky (USA – Mozaik), Nancy Kerr & The Sweet Visitor Band (UK – BBC Folk Singer of the Year 2015), Luke Plumb (Shooglenifty), Nancy Kerr & James Fagan (AUS/UK), Rens Van der Zalm (Netherlands – Mozaik), James Keelaghan (Canada), Martyn Wyndham-Read (UK) and Bill Jackson (Australia).
Ruth began her solo journey in 2019, releasing Daisywheel, produced by acclaimed musician and composer Luke Plumb (Shooglenifty). The album was nominated for ‘Best Folk Album 2020’ at the Music Victoria Awards and has been described as “…compelling and intimately fierce” (Living Tradition – UK).
“Ruth Hazleton doesn’t just interpret folk traditions - she inhabits them, reshaping ancient stories with modern fire. What makes [her music] most compelling is her ability to hold tradition and transformation in the same hand… In an ever-changing world, Ruth Hazleton remains a constant: a voice of truth, a conduit of folklore, and one of the most vital, visionary artists working in folk music today’. ~ Stevie Connor, Sound Café (Canada)
“Ruth Hazleton has the rare gift to make the new sound old and the old sound new. Past and present flow together through her stunning vocal delivery of these fine songs.” ~ Thomm Jutz (Nashville, USA)
“A masterclass on every level” ~Sista Mary, Bay FM
