-Synopsis-
Professional climber Emily Harrington has summited Everest, 8000-meter peaks, and dominated the competition circuit but, her greatest challenge extends beyond the physical. To cement her legacy in the male dominated world of elite rock climbing, she sets her sights on a career-defining 24-hour ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan.
Caught between the pursuit of personal ambition and the ticking biological clock of life, a near-fatal fall forces Emily to reckon with what she’s willing to risk. Equal parts gripping survival story and intimate portrait, Girl Climber isn’t just about breaking records, it’s about breaking barriers. Amongst Yosemite’s legendary boy’s club, Emily isn’t proving she is the best *Girl Climber-- she proving she is one of the best. Period.
ABOUT THE SUBJECTS:
EMILY HARRINGTON | Subject
Emily Harrington is one of the most successful and versatile professional climbers in the world. She’s a five-time US National Champion, has completed numerous first female ascents of 5.14 routes, summited Mt. Everest, and made a complete ski descent of Cho Oyu - the world’s 6th tallest peak. In November of 2020 Harrington became the first woman to free climb the Golden Gate route on El Capitan in under 24 hours, making her the 4th woman in history to free climb El Capitan in a day.
ALEX HONNOLD | Subject
Alex Honnold is a professional rock climber whose audacious free-solo ascents of America’s biggest cliffs have made him climbing’s transcendent, breakout star, inspiring millions around the world. Beyond his 2017 history-making ascent of El Capitan, dramatically documented in the Oscar-winning film Free Solo, Alex is simply one of the hardest working, certainly most accomplished, and greatest climbers to ever live. He is the founder of the Honnold Foundation, the host of the Climbing Gold podcast, and the author of Alone on the Wall.
ADRIAN BALLINGER | Subject
Adrian Ballinger is a big mountain climber and skier, certified mountain guide, and professional speaker. He has led over 150 international climbing expeditions on six continents, and made 17 successful summits of 8,000m peaks, including 8 summits of Mount Everest. Adrian has climbed Everest and K2 without the use of supplemental oxygen and is the only American to have made three successful ski descents of 8,000m peaks, including the first ski descent of Manaslu from its summit. Ballinger is the founder of Alpenglow Expeditions, and has been professionally guiding groups on the world’s tallest mountains for 25 years.
HILAREE NELSON | Subject
The late Hilaree Nelson is regarded as the most prolific ski mountaineer of her generation. She had a career encompassing dozens of first descents through more than 40 expeditions to 16 different countries. The mother of two was the first woman to link two 8000m peaks, Everest and Lhotse, in one 24 hour push. Nelson and partner Jim Morrison made the first ski descent of the "Dream Line" in 2018, the Lhotse Couloir from the summit, one of the most prized un-skied lines in the world.
-Director's Statement-
When I started filming with Emily Harrington on El Capitan in 2015, the goal was to document her climbing goal, and to make a short film for an outdoor brand. But, as Emily’s personal and professional life evolved, I started to see a deeper, more meaningful story take shape - one of overcoming fear, gender bias, and self-doubt. I wanted to flip the script on male dominated climbing films, where women were delegated to the valley floor, looking up in fear at their heroic partners. I wanted to present a different point of view, with a female central character achieving her wildest dreams. It became my mission to film and direct a feature documentary showing how Emily faces both external and internal challenges, and how she overcomes them.
As a professional climber, and close friend of Emily, I had extraordinary access to documenting her personal and professional life as an elite athlete at the pinnacle of her career. For nearly 10 years, I followed Emily around the world, filming her climbing expeditions, training at home, and fighting her demons on El Capitan. No other artistic medium than video could show Emily’s athletic intensity, nor the visceral drama unfolding thousands of feet off the ground at the end of a rope. Only by making a feature documentary film about Emily’s extraordinary climbing achievements, and her infectious passion for rock climbing, can her story be fully and intimately told.
