Description
Join Coltrane House Philadelphia & Ars Nova Workshop for an extraordinary evening as the Ravi Coltrane Trio honors the 99th birthday of saxophone giant John Coltrane. This performance is the centerpiece of a full-day celebration and serves as a benefit for the urgent preservation needs of the Coltrane House in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.
Located at 1511 North 33rd Street, the modest rowhome where Coltrane lived from 1952–1958 is a National Historic Landmark and a site of profound artistic and spiritual transformation. Within its walls, Coltrane practiced with relentless devotion, welcomed fellow musicians, and endured both personal struggle and renewal—culminating in his breakthrough masterpiece Blue Train (1957). From this North Philadelphia home, Coltrane rose from an itinerant sideman to a visionary artist whose music reshaped the course of modern jazz.
On October 10, his son Ravi Coltrane—himself a celebrated saxophonist, bandleader, and torchbearer of his father’s legacy—brings his trio to Solar Myth to honor this history and propel it forward.
Proceeds from this event directly support the stabilization and restoration of the Coltrane House, ensuring that this vital landmark remains a source of inspiration for future generations.
