Hawaii’s own JP Kennedy has dedicated the last 25 years to making music that matters. From early hits like “Let’s Rock” and “Know That” with Next G to worldwide acclaim as a founding member of The Green, his story is a classic tale of determination, success, setbacks and family.
On Dec. 12 and Dec. 13, Kennedy will return to the stage after a brief hiatus to headline a two-night engagement at HB Social Club.
Kennedy co-founded The Green in 2009 alongside his cousin and co-lead vocalist, Caleb Keolanui (who are both nephews of Danny Kennedy of Mana'o Co.), keyboard player Ikaika Antone and guitarist Zion Thompson. The four were later joined by bassist Brad Watanabe and drummer Leslie Ludiazo, completing the band’s original lineup.
The band’s impressive list of accolades includes multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Best Reggae Album as well as Group of the Year in 2014. Their self-titled 2010 debut set a record for remaining on the Billboard chart for 69 consecutive weeks and was named Best Reggae Album by iTunes.
The band also enjoyed multiple #1 debuts on the Billboard Reggae Chart, including “Ways & Means” (2011), “Hawai'i '13” (2013), and “Marching Orders” (2017).
In preparation for December’s concerts, Kennedy will also produce a series of documentary-style content that will lay the foundation for “FloweRAGE” and share mo‘olelo regarding his family foundations, the local (as well as national and international) music business and his craft as a guitarist and singer-songwriter.
