About Hoots & Hellmouth

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2025, Hoots & Hellmouth continues to craft an ever-evolving mix of folk, rock, soul, and gospel-influenced Americana that’s earnest and inviting, organic and real, and feels like home.
The story of Hoots & Hellmouth begins in 2005 in the college town of West Chester, Pennsylvania, where Sean Hoots and Andrew “Hellmouth” Gray, both veterans of the Philly music scene, were yearning for something different. Hoots, raised in the Carolinas and steeped in bluegrass, gospel, and Southern traditions, was eager to reconnect with his folk roots. Gray, coming from a post-punk background, shared the same desire for something raw and stripped down.
Together with multi-instrumentalist Rob Berliner, they developed a passionate following for their raucous, foot-stomping, revival-style live shows. Their early recordings, including 2007’s self-titled debut and 2009’s The Holy Open Secret, showcased a sound that was soulful, rootsy, and full of heart.
In 2010, after a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, they recorded the EP Face First in the Dirt and their third full-length, Salt, expanding their sonic palette with bluesy grit and rock undertones. The band spent years on the road, living out of vans and forging deep connections with audiences across the country. In reaction to the neo-Americana wave saturating the pop landscape, they began weaving elements of rock and R&B into their Americana foundation, crafting a sound that was both familiar and refreshingly new.
By 2014, they were ready to evolve again, recording at Mt. Slippery, the Clifton Heights studio home to indie band Dr. Dog. Working with Brooklyn producer Devin Greenwood, they emerged with 2016’s In the Trees Where I Can See the Forest, a stirring, soulful record praised for its beauty and depth. Songs from those sessions also became the EP Uneasy Pieces, highlighting a band at the height of its songwriting powers—introspective and layered, but still grounded in rhythm, melody, and community.
And now… older and wiser… their sounds continues to wind through foot-stomping revival anthems to atmospheric, soul-infused explorations, their catalog tells the story of a band unafraid to evolve while staying rooted in authenticity. Two decades in, their live shows remain as heartfelt and electrifying as ever—moments of joy, catharsis, and connection that invite every listener to be part of the journey.
About The Tisburys

“Will it all just stay the same?” asks songwriter Tyler Asay on “Forever”, the first single from The Tisburys’ new album, A Still Life Revisited. Recorded at Dr. Dog’s Mt. Slippery studio in the suburbs of Philadelphia with their longtime engineer/producer Justin Nazario, A Still Life Revisited is The Tisburys’ most collaborative effort to date. In an era where “bands” are seen as one individual, this is truly a “band record” with every member contributing songwriting and production ideas (especially from longtime lead guitarist John Domenico and keyboardist/co-producer Jason McGovern). “The goal with this record was ‘everything in its right place” says Asay. “Every instrument is playing its part and every song came together like a puzzle”.
