TAYF brings fresh voices and ideas to the musical tradition of maqam. Combining musicians from the SWANA region and beyond, the group expands the standard repertoire while maintaining a connection to its ensemble members’ roots, delivering an innovative and spacious sound. This anniversary concert will celebrate TAYF’s continued existence and growth as an incubator of emerging maqam musicians from the margins and as a community gatherer. The show will weave live bellydance with TAYF headlining their classic repertoire and some fresh pieces. The first set features more traditional music, focusing on the spirit of tarab—musical ecstasy. The second set, dedicated to the pioneering composer Ziyad Rahbani, pays homage to his impact on Arab music and takes us into a more modern approach. The Arabic word TAYF evades a singular definition: spectrum, queer, light, ephemeral. The ensemble leans into every interpretation, merging the traditions of maqam with commitments to an expansive future.
