Backyard Stories
A bushfire on the New South Wales coast. Family heirlooms. A dream of being Michelle Pfeiffer in I Am Sam. Letters to your future self.
After a sold out show at Melbourne International Film Festival, join host Claudia Nankervis at The Brunswick Ballroom for a night of storytelling.
Backyard Stories began in 2019 under a leaky marquee in our Carlton sharehouse backyard. Each event centres around a single word - the theme for the night - and features a curated line-up of storytellers who write and then read a story. It began as an intimate night in our concrete backyard, and is now held regularly at the Brunswick Ballroom.
There have been iterations in New York, Amsterdam and London, and features in the Festival Club line up every year at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. The show is recorded live for the Backyard Stories podcast, creating an archive of funny, moving and unforgettable tales.
Grab a drink, take a seat, and enjoy the show.

ACCESSIBILITY
We prioritise accessibility for our guests at the Brunswick Ballroom. As part of our commitment, we have installed an Acorn Indoor 180 Curved Stairlift https://youtu.be/_Uxr-EcI0E4?si=LHu15xRKgGOj0RYX
While this addresses some accessibility challenges, please note that guests using wheelchairs will need to transfer out of them to use the stairlift, which may pose difficulties for some patrons.
We understand that ensuring accessibility is an ongoing process and remain dedicated to exploring further solutions to make our venue accessible to everyone. Should you have any specific requirements or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us beforehand.
