Short Waves Presents:
Otala are a post-rock/experimental quintet based in London, UK. Their most recent EP ‘Fire! To The River’ displays an almost paradoxical combination of coherence and range, exploring ambience and gentle folk guitar licks before collapsing and resurging into post-rock crescendos as the lyrical narrative pushes vulnerably into heart wrenching catharsis.
Trash TV: Taking cues from the minimalism of Minutemen and the psychotics of Unwound, Christopher Happe (guitar) formed Trash TV as an egalitarian project with Sean Theoclitus (drums) and Francesca Gonçalves (bass).
Like other post-punk bands Trash TV’s genre is hard to nail down with them switching between speedy riffs, droning feedback, funky stabs, and bell hits. However, the consistent thread between Trash TV’s set is the space the bandmates inherit with Francesca’s brash bass dominating the lows, Chris’s scrappy guitar accenting the highs, and Sean’s feral drumming incessantly contorting and rebalancing to keep the songs from falling apart. Taking inspiration from New York’s ramshackle past but just as eager to apply it to its present, Trash TV makes music to shock people out of submissiveness, embracing originality and intensity.
Sold: 'Morricone-inspired folk rock, slipping between fast-paced, high-energy, driving punk and sleazy, moody ballads.'
